Dason Hill looking to take a shot

The Nemaha Central Middle School boys basketball team played against the Hiawatha Red Hawks for the first time this season. This game was played on Monday, January 16 at NCEMS. The Nemaha Central basketball boys came out hyped and ready to play.

The Thunder 8th grade A-team game started off outstanding for the Thunder boys as they scored 20 points and Hiawatha only scored 3. The second quarter came around and the Red Hawks were able to get things going and scored 14 points to decrease the Thunder lead.  The halftime score was  26 - 17 with the Thunder still leading.

In the second half of the game, the Thunder boys and the Red Hawks were playing well as both teams scored 11 points each. The third quarter ended with a score of 37-28. Then came the final quarter of the A-team game. The Hiawatha Red Hawks gave their best shot at outscoring the Thunder but came up short losing the game 50-46. The Thunder picked up another close win on the season.

Kalem Schmelzle said, “It was a tough-fought game and a hard one but we stuck together and won.”

Starting off the 7th grade A-team game, the players were getting ready to play another great game. Starting the first quarter, the seventh grade A-team scored 4 points while the Red Hawks didn’t put any points on the board to end the first quarter. In the second quarter of the game, the Thunder boys started off very strong as they put up a big fight against Hiawatha and scored 14 while the Red Hawks scored 7 making the score 18-7 at halftime.

The third quarter was a low-scoring quarter as the Thunder and Red Hawks each only managed to score 5 points, making the score 23-12. The Thunder boys worked hard to keep their lead scoring 7 points, while the Red Hawks only scored 2. The seventh grade A-team finished the game with a win, 30-14.

Braden Macke said, “We played our hardest and prevailed in the end.”

The 7th and 8th grade B-team combined to play Hiawatha. In the first quarter, they were battling it out and NC came out on top, 7-3. In the second quarter, the Thunder boys took an even bigger lead by scoring 10 and only allowing Hiawatha to score 1 point.  The halftime score was 17-4.

The second half of the game got underway and both teams added a couple of points to their score.  The third quarter ended with a score of 26-6. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder boys were outscored by a basket, but when the buzzer went off, the Thunder boys were victorious, 31-13.

All three teams were victorious on the night and they hope to keep the trend going in future games.
