First grade class with the presenters

On Wednesday, October 26, the first graders assembled into one classroom to listen to Kristina Haverkamp and Marlene Haverkamp give a “Dairy Talk.” The ladies talked about what it is like to live and manage a dairy farm.

The ladies first talked about some products that the students might see everyday. The students asked questions about which one of the products the presenters liked the most. Then, the presenters showed and talked about some of the photos of the farm. The students listened to the speakers as they read a book out loud to them.

After the book, the presenters talked about harvesting their crops and they even brought a bag of what they call, cow chow. The students passed around the bag to look at it and even smell it. Then they showed what they feed the small babies, taking out a big bag of powdered milk and passing it around so the kids could smell it too. Some liked the smell and some didn’t. One student said it even smelled like cake mix.

“It was good and it was fun, they were talking about cows and stuff. We got some books and we got cups and a fidget,” said Kallen Foster.

Students were also able to view some of the pictures by passing them around and the ladies answered the questions of the curious students. At the end, the students ate cheese sticks and received a baggie full of goodies that they could take home and use.

“They gave me a cheese stick and I learned that you should drink three servings of milk everyday,” said Jaelynn Koch.
