Some of eighth grade scholars bowl members

The Nemaha Central Middle School scholars’ bowl team headed to Riverside on Thursday, February 24. Three other teams in the Big 7 League competed at the meet.  The teams were Hiawatha, Holton, and Riverside. 

The NC 7A team started the night out winning the first two matches in pool play against Holton 60-35 and Hiawatha 40-20 and then losing the third match against Riverside 40-80. For the bracket play, the team lost their first match against Riverside B 30-70. In the last match of the bracket play, the NC 7A team played the NC 7B team and ended with a win of 50-30. The NC 7A team finished the night in seventh place.

The NC 7B team started off pool play against Holton resulting in a loss, 40-70. In the next round, 7B played Hiawatha. They tried their best, but lost by 10 points with a score of 30-40. In the last match of pool play, they went against Riverside, and ended up with a win, 80-70. Now that pool play was over it was time for them to play in the bracket. They started against Holton A and lost with a score of 50-70. The second bracket match was against NC 7A where they lost 30-50.  After losing to their fellow classmates, the team ended up in eighth place at this meet.

“The scholars bowl meet was so fun! We met tons of new people and also got to answer lots of questions!” said Carson Edelman.

The NC 8A team started out great against Holton, with a close win of 80-70. They came in strong and played against Hiawatha with yet another win for the night, 100-30. For the last pool play match against Riverside it was a super close one that ended in a tie. The tie breaker question was given and NC ended up losing the match with a score of 50-60. NC 8A then matched up with Hiawatha B and it was another close match that ended in a win, 45-35. This moved 8A into the championship round with Holton A that ended in an NC win 70-40.  The NC 8A team ended the night with first place at this meet.

The NC 8B team started the night off strong with a win against Holton, 80-15. For the second match of pool play, they went against Hiawatha and finished with a 60-40 win. For the third match, NC played Riverside and won the match 70-30. The first match of the bracket play was against Holton A and they lost 25-50. For the very last match, they played Hiawatha B and took home a win with the score of 60-50. The NC 8B team ended with third place on the night.

“I’m so proud of how our team played. Hopefully we keep it up at the tournament!” said Marissa Koch.

Overall the eighth-grade teams did a great job at the meet. The seventh-grade teams hope to improve on the season as they gain more confidence in answering the questions. The teams have 2 meets left before the Big 7 League tournament.
