On Tuesday, November 23, 2021, the Nemaha Central Middle School held its annual, Can the Teacher event. The classes that participated were the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
This event has students bringing in canned goods or other non-perishable items to donate to the Nemaha County Food Pantry. The students had two weeks to bring in canned goods and non-perishable items. In return, if the students could stack the items past the doorknob they would get to watch movies for their class time.
At the start of the day, each class counted their cans to see who collected the most. The class with the highest average of items per person would receive an ice cream sundae party. The winning class of the Can the Teacher event was the 7A class with Mrs. Griffith as their homeroom teacher. The middle school combined brought in a total of 1640 items.
“It is good that our middle school came together to collect that many cans and items for our community,” said Caleb Hynek.
After counting the cans, each class stacked their cans up to the door handle of their home room teacher’s door. Next, they took down their stack and boxed them up to load them into the truck for the food pantry delivery.
The students picked a movie to watch in class and enjoyed snacks and drinks. After the movie, some students went to the city park to play outside for some fresh air before dismissing for Thanksgiving Break.
“It was a fantastic way to spend the last couple of days with my class,” said Elizabeth Berkley.
Overall, the day was fun and the students only had half a day, so they were able to leave at 11:30 for Thanksgiving Break.
