The Nemaha Central Middle School Thunder girls basketball team took on the Holton Wildcats on Thursday, November 18 at Holton.
Kicking off the night was the eighth grade A-team. Both teams started off slow, but the Thunder was able to catch a one-point lead 3- 2. In the second quarter, the Wildcats were able to outscore the Thunder and pull ahead with a score of 5-8 with the Thunder trailing.
Coming out of halftime the Thunder were determined to catch the Wildcats. The Thunder team was able to score 3 points while the Wildcats were held scoreless. Going into the fourth quarter, the teams were neck-and-neck with a score of 8-8. Both teams fought hard, but the Thunder fell short. The Thunder only scored 2 points while the Wildcats were able to score 7 points to pull ahead. The final score was 10-15 with the Thunder losing the game.
Next up was the eighth-grade B-team, ready to seek revenge. Both teams were only able to score two points in the first quarter, leaving it tied 2-2. Going strong into the second quarter, the Thunder was able to pull ahead tallying 7 points to their score, while the Wildcats were only able to score 2. The score after the first half was 9-4, with the Thunder taking the lead.
After halftime, the Thunder was committed to keeping their lead. The Thunder couldn't keep the momentum up and only scored 2 points, while the Wildcats scored 3 points. Still holding the lead, the Thunder was up 11-7. In the final quarter, the Thunder girls were determined to pull out the win, so they gained 10 points, while the Wildcats were held to only 2 points. The Thunder pulled out their well-deserved win, 21-9.
“We had to work really hard with missing people, but we still fought hard to the end,” said Ali Lueger.
In the other gym was the seventh grade A-team game. The first quarter was even between the teams with both teams only scoring 4 points. The next quarter the Thunder took off, scoring 7 points, while the Wildcats were only able to score 3. The score heading into halftime was 11-7 with the Thunder charging ahead.
Going into the second half the Thunder was able to maintain their lead. With both teams scoring 6 points, the score was now 17-13. During the fourth quarter, the Thunder team was able to run away with a win by scoring 5 points while the Wildcats only scored 1. The final score was 22-14 with the Thunder pulling away with another win.
Ella Huerter said, “We tried our best, and we came out with a win!”
After the seventh-grade A-team’s win, the seventh-grade B-team was ready to pull out another win. Starting off in the first quarter, the Thunder girls already tallied up 6 points, while the Wildcats were held to only 2 points. The Thunder had a nice lead of 4 points going into the second quarter. The second quarter was a little slower with the Thunder only scoring 4 points and the Wildcats only 2 points again. With a nice lead, the Thunder was winning, 10-4.
Determined to keep some momentum going, the Thunder was able to add 7 more points to their score, while the Wildcats scored 4. The Thunder still kept a strong lead, 17-8. Going very strong into the last quarter, the Thunder attained a remarkable 14 points, while the Wildcats were once again held to 2 points. The Thunder came out with a great win, 31-10.
The eighth grade A-team played right there with the Wildcats for 3 quarters and just fell short at the end. Overall, the Thunder girls had a good night with three of the four teams coming out with a win.
