The Nemaha Central Thunder girls basketball team took on their rivals, the Sabetha Bluejays on Monday, November 8. The night went in the Thunder team's favor as all teams came out with a win.

The night started off with the eighth-grade A-team in the main gym. In the first quarter, the girls scored 4 points and the Bluejays were able to get 4 points as well. At the end of the first quarter, the teams were tied 4-4. The second quarter was a little slower with both teams only getting 2 points. Going into halftime the teams were still tied 6-6.

After halftime, the Thunder girls were determined to get ahead. They did just that by scoring 5 points while the Bluejays were held scoreless. The score at the end of the third quarter was 11-6, with the Thunder in the lead. Going into the fourth quarter, the Thunder held their ground scoring 5 points, while the Bluejays were able to score 2 points. The final score was 16-8 with the Thunder snatching their first win of the night.

“We played great, got the win, and worked well together as a team,” said Kamryn Ranieri.

Next up was the eighth-grade B-team game. The Thunder team came out ready to obtain another win. The Thunder started off the game scoring 3 points, while the Bluejays were able to score 2 points. The next quarter was better, with the Thunder racking up 6 more points. The Bluejays also scored 6 points. The score going into halftime was 9-8 with the Thunder in the lead.

Going into the second half the Bluejays pulled ahead scoring 6 points while the Thunder were only able to score 4. The score after the third quarter was 13-14 with the Thunder trailing. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder team was determined to get back on top. The Thunder managed to pull back ahead by scoring 7 points while the Bluejays were held to 4. The final score was 20-18 with the Thunder raking in their second win of the night.

The seventh-grade A-team started the night off playing in the secondary gym. Starting off strong the Thunder girls put 12 points on the board, while the Bluejays were able to score 6. The score at the end of the first quarter was 12-6 with the Thunder in the lead. The second quarter wasn’t as strong with the Thunder girls only scoring 3 points, but at the same time, they were able to hold off the Bluejays and keep them scoreless. The score going into halftime was 15-6 with the Thunder pulling ahead.

“Sure, we started off a little slow at first, but then we picked up momentum and held up the defense. We got more aggressive and hit more shots to earn the win. I thought overall we did really well,” said Alex Burkitt.

Going into the second half, the Thunder and the Bluejays scored 2 points. The score going into the fourth quarter was 17-8. With a booming start in the fourth quarter, the Thunder tallied 8 more points, while the Bluejays were scoreless. The final score of the game was 25-8 with the Thunder accumulating another win from the Bluejays.

Next up was the seventh-grade B-team. The Thunder team was determined to pull out another win. Starting off in the first quarter, the girls gained 10 points and held the Bluejays to only 1 free throw. The score at the end of the first quarter was 10-1 with the Thunder leading. Going strong into the second quarter, the Thunder tallied 10 more points to their score, leaving the Bluejays scoreless. The score at the end of the first half was 20-1, with the Thunder charging ahead. 

After halftime, the NC girls only managed to score 4 points, and the Bluejays score stood still at only 1 point. The score was now at 24-1, with a commanding Thunder lead. Keeping the momentum strong, the Thunder scored 12 more points while the Bluejays did not hit a field goal in the game. The ending score was 36-1, with a big win for the Thunder.

Overall the night went well for the Thunder girls as they took a clean sweep over the Sabetha Bluejays. The Thunder girls look forward to the second half of the season.  The seventh grade A-team hopes to keep their undefeated streak alive while the eighth grade A-team hopes to avenge some of their close losses.
