Fifth grade class picture at the Omaha Zoo

Off to the zoo! On Friday, October 8, 2021, the fifth graders from Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School went to The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska for their class field trip. The students were excited to be able to go on a field trip and looked forward to the outing as they were studying animals and their environments in science class.

Before they ventured out at the zoo, the students were divided into groups with a parent volunteer in each group. That way, the groups could go see the exhibits that they were really interested in.  Some of the top attractions that were of interest to the students were the Lied Jungle, Desert Dome, Gorilla Valley, and the Aquarium with the walk-through tunnel.

After viewing several attractions, the students took a break for lunch either by eating the sack lunch they brought or buying lunch at the zoo.  After lunch, the students explored the zoo exhibits again until it was time to board the bus and head home.

“It was really fun. My favorite part was touching the stingrays and watching the elephants eat,” Piper Hiltgen said.

Hudson Kuckelman said, “It was pretty good. My favorite part was watching the hippopotamus run.”

To sum it all up the students, parent volunteers, and the teachers had an amazing time and were able to learn and have fun at the same time. The students know more about the animals and their environments after visiting the zoo.  Many students said they had a great time at The Henry Doorly Zoo and that they would love to go again.
