Second grade class listening to a presenter

Nemaha Central Elementary School had its annual Careers on Wheels on a beautiful sunny morning on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. The students in grades K-5 had the opportunity to see some potential career options allowing them to be open-minded about their future.

There were six local presenters that brought their trucks to the school to help the students get an idea of what they do in their particular career. The Kansas Department of Transportation representative, Mark Baker talked to the students about the basics of traveling in his vehicle and the work that goes along with it.  Meals on Wheels represented by Alane Bloom and Diane Yunghans discussed their role in the community of supplying meals to those in need. Stan Broxterman and Stephen Hulsing of the Nemaha-Marshall Electric Cooperative visited with the students on the importance and safety of being near electrical lines along with what they do with the lines. The Bruna Implement Company with Craig Haverkamp showed the students a lot of tools and a crane that they use on the job. J-6 Enterprise with Kenton McKee and Kayla Streit gave the students a talk on their business from raising pigs to making feed products. Channel Xcel Ag with Corey Holthaus showed the students one of their vehicles used in planting crops.

A few of the highlights from the event were that the presenters of Meals on Wheels handed out candy to the students and the presenters from J-6 also gave out items, such as a stress ball,  a handband with pig ears, or stickers.

Third-grader Rylee Lemons said “I think it was fun. I liked the crane and thought it was cool.”

Grayson Rider of first grade said, “I think that the cement roller was cool.”

The overall experience of the day was fun, exciting, and an opening for the students to wonder and to think further about possible careers for their future.
