Honor Band
The Nemaha Central Middle School band students attended Honor Band on February 18 in Saint Marys. The schools in attendance were Nemaha Central, Saint Marys, Rossville, and Silver Lake.
When the students arrived, they took their seats sorted by section of instrument. They practiced their songs for most of the day, with breaks in between. Then the audience walked in and waited for the performance. When the students performed, they played perfectly and sounded amazing. The songs were “Grand Gallop,” “Triton Fanfare,” “Eagle Ridge,” and “Latinesque.”

Pi Day
Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School had pie making on Feb. 20. Students invited their grandfriends and made pies with them. Students in grades 6-8 each made one cherry and one apple pie with their grandfriends. The pies were then sold to the community and in total there were 256 pies made. With all the funds to buy supplies figured in, $1800 was raised from making pies.
There was a coin war on March 2-6 to raise more money for Pi Day. Kids each brought coins as positives for their grade’s bucket, and bills counted as negatives to sabotage the other grades. The top four grades with the most money in their buckets got to randomly choose three students to pie an eighth grader in the face at the Pi Day assembly. Sixth grade students got first place, fourth grade got second, third grade got third place, and first grade got fourth place. The total amount of money raised from the coin war was $1566.91.
On March 13, the eighth graders lead classroom activities for kindergarteners through sixth grade. Kindergarten students played a matching game then made Pi Day hats. First grade made bracelets using the digits of Pi. Second graders created a Pi Building art project with watercolors. Third graders played a card game with the digits of Pi. Fourth graders watched the Pi day play, performed by half of the eighth grade students, then created a graphic using the characters of Pi. Fifth graders did an art project creating circles using a compass. Sixth graders created the Pi symbol on a coordinate plane. Seventh graders painted kids’ faces. All the kids greatly enjoyed the activities they participated in and loved getting to watch the eighth graders get pied! All proceeds from Pi Day went to Shirley Schmitz.
