Picnic with Pals

On August 29, 2025, 3rd graders had Picnic with Pals, an opportunity to involve the family members and friends in their day. All grades at Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School have a community involvement event that allows students to connect with others.

“There were some fun activities, you could play at the park and just play some football,” Griffin Hiltgen, 3rd grader, said. All of the students and their family members brought a sack lunch to enjoy at the park before they played on the playground and competed in field games.

The weather was in the mid-70s, an amazing day for students to be outside. Everyone had a great time eating, talking, and playing.

Pep Rally

NCEMS hosted a pep rally on September 9th to highlight fall sports. “I enjoyed the pep rally, the game looked super fun,” Ava Madrid, 8th grade, said.

Head Football Coach Hadden Hiltgen kicked off the pep rally by introducing the 28 players this year. Next, Head Volleyball Coach Nikki Honeyman presented this year’s 7th and 8th grade volleyball players. After that, Principal Jessica Koch introduced the cross country team.

Finally, a high-stakes game was played. Contestants hit cups off the top of opponents’ pool noodles, and whoever's cup was left standing won! Brooklyn Korber, 8th grade, won the game, by using her strategy of “Walking away and staying away from people”.

Careers Days

On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Nemaha Central Elementary School kindergarten and first grade classes met to discuss Careers at School in the gym. The kids enjoyed listening to the following speakers: Mrs. Amy Kuckleman, technology coordinator; Mrs. Jamie Koch, speech pathologist; and Mrs. Kim Sudbeck, office assistant. The students were excited to ask many questions.

On Friday, Sept. 12, the remaining elementary students got to see six different careers at the Careers on Wheels Day. The kids enjoyed listening to Monica Becker with the United States Postal Service, Kelly Williams with Seneca Realty, Kathy Childress with Meals on Wheels, Betsy Macke with Koch and Company, Gabe Jones a Game Warden, and Ely Millard with KSNT Storm Tracker.

“My favorite business there was Koch and Company because they gave out free highlighters,” Paxton Stallbaumer, 4th grade, said. The students learned a lot about what schooling is needed to have these careers and are looking forward to this event in future years.
