NCMS Competes at Big 7 Scholars' Bowl Meet

The Nemaha Central Middle School Scholars’ Bowl team went to Perry-Lecompton to compete in a Big 7 league tournament on Tuesday, March 3. The tournament consisted of all the Big 7 league schools. NC only had one team of seventh grade and one team of eighth grade attending the meet. The seventh grade team was made up of Zoey Sudbeck, Alayna Scism, Kaitlyn Hammes, Kaden Peterson, Collin Jost, and Abram Keim. The eighth grade team consisted of Emma Stallbaumer, Holden Bass, Joe Korber, John Langill, and Silas Ulmer. Abe Hilbert was on the tournament team also, but did not attend due to not feeling well.

In the 7th grade tournament, NC played Royal Valley first ending with their first loss 35-60. The next round was against Jeff West, with Jeff West scoring 80 points while NC only scored 70. It was NC’s second loss with five more teams to go. In the third round against Hiawatha, NC won 90-60. In the fourth round against Sabetha, NC lost,15-50. In the fifth round, NC played against Holton who they beat 55-45 for their second win. In the sixth round against Perry, the 7th grade won by only five points 50-45. In the 7th graders final round, they played against Riverside, and won 70-10. The 7th grade team record for the tournament was 4-3, which placed them third out of the 8 teams.

“It was a great experience for my first time,” said Abram Keim.

In the 8th graders first match, they played against Royal Valley and won 80-40. In the second round, they played against Jeff West. They won 90-60 for NC’s second win in the tournament. For the third round, NC played against Hiawatha and lost 60-70. In the fourth round, NC played against Sabetha and lost another close one, 60-70. For NC’s fourth round, they played against Holton and won with a score of 60-50. In the fifth round, NC lost to Perry 35-70. For NC’s final round they played against Riverside. NC won 80-40 for their last match this year. NC’s 8th grade team placed 4th out of the 8 teams with a record of 4-3.

“There was great competition and everyone tried their hardest,” said Joe Korber.

“It is amazing to see what these students really do know. I am proud of them for their efforts and I think they have all gained confidence by participating in scholars’ bowl this season,” said Mrs. Betty Peterson, a scholars’ bowl sponsor.
