Elementary students prepare for the parade with their crafty headbands

Nemaha Central High School Homecoming 2023 kicked off a week of festivities on Monday, September 25th, 2023. The theme of this year's homecoming was, “Roll Out The Red Carpet.” Students at NCHS took part in daily dress-up themes such as Movie Character Monday, Dynamic Duo Tuesday, World Premiere Wednesday, Hollywood Throwback Thursday, and Feature Presentation Friday. The class with the most participation for dress-up days was the sophomore class of 2026. The winning class of the dress-up days was the sophomores, class of 2026.

Homecoming isn’t just about the school, it’s also about the community. There were over
30 participants in the decorating contest judged on Monday, September 25th. Coming out on top
was First Heritage Bank, winning first place, Stepping Stones Daycare winning second place,
and Saints Peter and Paul 8th Grade Girls winning third place. Overall the community's
participation and support were overwhelming, making the judges’ decision difficult.

On Thursday, September 28th, NCHS students gathered at the high school to participate
in some of the yearly homecoming rituals. Kicking off the night was the fashion show, the
freshman, class of 2027, took the win for that activity. The third event was the class skit where
the sophomore, class of 2026, won that one. Last, but not least, was the bonfire in the parking
lot of Swisher Field. The winners of the high school decorations were, once again, the
sophomores, class of 2026. The overall winning class was the sophomores, class of 2026.

With all of the traditions going on during homecoming week, we can never forget the
parade and pep rally. The parade started at 2:00 on Friday, September 29th. The parade route
consisted of driving past SPPS then driving down 11th St. to get to NCEMS, then continuing to
the Nemaha Central football field where the pep rally took place. Jayden Seitz, NCHS
sophomore, led the pep rally, with performances by the NCHS cheer and dance teams and
band.

Homecoming week isn’t over until a king and queen are crowned. This year’s king candidates were Aden Feldkamp, son of Anthony and Sarah Feldkamp, Cooper Kramer, son of Joe and Jana Kramer, Carter Kramer, son of Joe and Jana Kramer, and Carter Sudbeck, son of Michael and Amy Sudbeck. The queen candidates consisted of Kate Bartkoski, daughter of Dr. Anthony and Becky Bartkowski, Laura Hammes, daughter of Neal and Brenda Hammes, Anna Hermesch, daughter of Darrin and Leah Hermesch and Samantha Holthaus, daughter of David and Teresa Holthaus. After the candidates were introduced at halftime of the Nemaha Central football game against Jeff West, Aden Feldkamp and Anna Hermesch were crowned as homecoming king and queen. On top of the great homecoming week, the Thunder football team reigned as victors against Jeff West with a score of 46-0!

Closing up homecoming week was the 2023 homecoming dance which followed the
football game on Friday, September 29th. Anna Hermesch, 2023 Homecoming Queen, had to say this about this year’s homecoming dance, “Everyone enjoys the dress up days, competitions on Thursday night, and most of all-the homecoming dance after the Friday night football game. I would say this year's homecoming has been the most enjoyable out of all my high school years!”
