Seventh Grader Shooting a Free Throw

The Nemaha Central girls basketball team played their first home game against Holton on Monday, October 25, 2021. This would be the third game of the season, and NC was ready for another win.

The eighth grade A-team stepped on the court to face the Wildcats. NC started out the night slow with the first quarter score 2-6 trailing Holton. In the second quarter, the Thunder pulled together to take over the lead at halftime 14-10.

After halftime, NC stepped back onto the court ready for a victory. The girls played hard but only scored two points in the third quarter while Holton scored four cutting NC’s lead to two, 16-14. The Thunder team played hard for the win but they just came up short losing a close one, 21-22. 

Next on the court was the eighth grade B-team ready to take revenge on the Wildcats. After playing great defense on the Wildcats, NC ended the quarter ahead 2-0. The Thunder fought harder in the second quarter and continued their awesome defense leaving the Wildcats in the dust 11-0.

After halftime, the Thunder girls continued to score but the Wildcats made a shot to end the third quarter up 17-2. Convinced not to let Holton take any more shots, NC defended their basket but kept up the good offense too. The good play ended the game with a Thunder victory, 23-2.

Aubrey Rottinghaus said, “It was fun to take everything I learned in practice and use it on the court.” 

The seventh grade A-team was prepared to win their game against Holton. NC started the first quarter rough, falling behind 3-9 to Holton. The Thunder picked up their game and took control for a halftime lead, 13-10. 

The start to the second half of the game went in favor of the Thunder girls as they pulled further ahead, 27-11. With a good-sized lead going into the fourth quarter, the Thunder went on to score eleven points but kept up their defense against the Wildcats. NC secured the win for their team with a score of 38-11.

“We struggled at first but we played our hearts out and won,” said Kendra Schmitz.

When the A-team game was over, the B-team started the game confidently. NC played good offense and good defense to end the first quarter on top 7-2. With the goal of victory in mind, the Thunder kept up their game against Holton and ended halftime on top 15-4. 

Now that halftime was over, the Wildcats stepped up their game. NC played hard but Holton was making a comeback against the Thunder leaving the score at 15-10. Determined not to lose, the Thunder made sure to bring their defense back and beat the Wildcats. NC ended the basketball game by obtaining a victory over Holton with a score of 19-11.

Overall, the night was very successful for the Thunder. Except for the close eighth-grade game, NC won the rest of their games that night. NC was proud that they played well and fought hard for their victories over the Wildcats.
