NCMS Cheerleader Hypes Up Students at the Pep Rally

Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School are starting to turn things back to normal this year. One way they are trying to do that is by holding pep rallies. For that reason, NCEMS had their first pep rally in over a year on Thursday, September 16, 2021.

The first pep rally was a little different than past years. Instead of being in the gym of NCEMS, it was held outside in front of the main entrance. Struggling for everyone to find a seat, the staff and students were finally all able to get situated for the event to begin.

Dr. Beck started off the pep rally welcoming everyone and giving a small speech. After her speech, the cheerleaders were introduced and performed a cheer to get the staff and students excited for the rest of the events. Then the volleyball, football, and cross country athletes and coaches introduced themselves. The head coaches and some of the players gave a speech about their records or how well the teams have played so far.

“It was fun to see the middle schoolers,” said Kaydin Graf.

When the sports teams were done being introduced, the cheerleaders said that three athletes and two coaches would play a game called “Chubby Bunny”. Volleyball player Jolie Jones, football player Carter Hajek, cross country runner Bob Langill, volleyball coach Nikki Honeyman, and football coach Hadden Hiltgen were all called out to play the game. Carter Hajek was the winner of the game by stuffing his mouth with the most marshmallows and saying “Chubby Bunny.”

“It was exciting to get out of class and see everyone,” said Parker Bergman.

A fun activity that NCEMS does every pep rally is the challenge to see which grade gets something called “The Spirit Stick.” Coach Hiltgen and Coach Honeyman were the judges for this friendly competition. After a close call, the two judges declared the third grade as the winner of the Spirit Stick.

Even though COVID-19 is still limiting some activities, NCEMS was still able to hold the first pep rally in over a year. It was an amazing time for the students and staff to get back into old habits. It was a great chance at proving this pandemic isn’t holding NC back.
