The American Legion Riders lead the “Honor Flight” parade

Hundreds of mini flags wave through the wind as the students at Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle school wait patiently for the “Honors Flight” parade to arrive. Finally, the students and staff could see a police car and hear the sound of their sirens signaling their arrival.

On Tuesday, September 14, students filled the sidewalks with the mini American flags. As soon as the veterans came, a wave of patriotism swept over the students for the local veterans honored with a trip to Washington DC. The veterans were Jerry Odum, Elmer Lackey, Steve Honeyman, and Raymond Theime.

Eli Sudbeck said, “I thought it was great and definitely well deserved.”

The cars slowly drove past hundreds of students, who cheered, screamed, and waved. The cars continued through the driving lane at NCEMS and exited out to make the trip to the airport.

“It was pretty cool,” said Brice Wullschleger.

The honor flight was waiting for them to embark on their journey to Washington D.C. Even though the small event ended, the veterans' trip had just begun.  Thank you veterans for your service!
