Volleyball
On Thursday Sept. 3, the Nemaha Central Middle School (NCMS) volleyball team traveled to Jeff West for its first game of the season. The 7th grade A-team ended up playing a very close match, losing in three sets,10-25,25-23,10-15. The 7th grade B-team lost in three sets, 25-20, 11-25,10-15. For the 8th grade, the A-team had a very close game as well, losing in three sets,23-25, 27-25,15-9. “I think we did a great job of setting it up, and hitting it,” Ellie Burkitt, 8th, said. The 8th grade B-team lost in two,11-25, 11-25. The NCMS Thunder travel to play the Holton Wildcats next week.

On Thursday Sept. 10 the Nemaha Central Middle School (NCMS) volleyball team went to Rossville for its third volleyball game of the season.
The 8th grade A-team lost both sets 13-25 and 19-25. The 8th grade B-team also lost both sets, scoring14-25,5-25. The 7th grade A-team lost the match in three sets with scores 22-25, 25-21, 12-15.
The 7th grade B-team also went into three sets with the score being 23-25, 25-19, and 8-15. Although everyone worked hard, they just couldn't get the win.
“It was a really intense and hard game. I think our team did really well. We just need more practice,” Nora Ranieri, 8th, said.

On Saturday Sept.12 the Nemaha Central 7th and 8th grade played in the Axtell A-team volleyball tournament.
The 8th grade started out a successful day by playing Valley Heights, winning in three sets, 25-13, 23-25, and 15-13. Next, they played Linn, taking it in three sets, 25-15, 22-25, and 15-10.Then they played Axtell, taking it in two sets 25-16 and 25-23. Against Frankfort, they won in two sets 25-10 and 25-18. Finally, they played Linn again in the championship. Unfortunately, they ended up losing in two sets, still taking home second place.
Seventh grade started out their day playing Doniphan West, losing in two sets 18-25 and 19-25. Next, they played SPPS, and they lost that game in two sets as well 9-25 and 19-25. In their final game, they played Frankfort, and also lost in two sets 13-25 and 10-25. Sadly, they did not make it to the championship.
“I think we played really well, but we do need to work on calling the ball a lot more,” Kaleah Sanders, 7th, said.

On Sept. 3 the Nemaha Central Middle School (NCMS) football team traveled down to Jeff West (JW) to take on the Tigers in their first matchup of the season. The game had to be rescheduled to 7:00 PM due to temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. In the first quarter, Landry Hiltgen, 8th, completed a 29 yard pass to Dayton Hernandez, 8th, scoring first, followed by a 2-point conversion.
Jack Stallbaumer, 7th, intercepted a pass near the end of the first quarter. “I was just excited that I got the ball. It was the first play where Jeff West had the ball on offense, so I was feeling pretty proud,” Stallbaumer said. The end of the first quarter was 8-0, Nemaha Central.
During the second quarter, the Thunder forced a safety which scored them 2 extra points. The second quarter ended 10-0. JW scored a touchdown at the end of the third quarter, bringing the score to 10-6.. Hernandez received another 6-yard touchdown pass and put the cherry on top with yet another 2-point conversion.
JW scored a long passing touchdown at the very end of the game. The result was 24-12, NCMS Thunder securing the victory. This win was an amazing start to a very promising season ahead.
