NCMS Boys Basketball Plays Home Opener

The Thunder boys would play their first home game of the season on Thursday, January 9. The Thunder would be playing the Perry-Lecompton Kaws, with the eighth grade boys looking to get their second win of the season, and the seventh grade boys looking to get their first.

The eighth grade A-team got off to a great start. Their offense scored a sloppy 9 points with lots of missed shots. What really stood out for the Thunder was their defense, as they only allowed a single point to the Kaws. The second quarter was not a good one for the Thunder. The team would only score a total of 5 points. Once again though, the Thunder’s defense shined allowing 0 points in the second quarter. At the end of the first half, the Thunder would be on top 14-1.

The second half came with lots of points for the Thunder. In the third alone, the Thunder scored 15 points! The Kaws got some offense going and were able to score 4 points of their own. NC would continue to score a ton, as they would score 14 points in the fourth. The Kaws offense started to look better, scoring 6 points in the final quarter. The Thunder with some amazing defense in the first half and amazing offense in the second half would go on to beat Perry-Lecompton by a score of 43-11.

Reid McKee said, “We played a lot better in our second game, having learned from our mistakes in the first game.”

The eighth grade B-team got off to a hot start in their game. They would dominate offensively and defensively scoring 12 points and allowing 0 points to the Kaws. The Thunder would look just as good in the second quarter scoring 10 points. The defense also looked great once again allowing only 3 points. At halftime, the Thunder team was dominating 22-3.

The second half started very slow and stayed that way throughout the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter, the Thunder scored only 2 points and the Kaws didn’t score at all. The fourth quarter looked a lot better for the Thunder scoring 9 points. The Kaw’s fourth quarter didn’t change much as they were held scoreless once again. The final score of the game would be 33-3, with the Thunder winning.

The seventh grade A-team started the game slow. The Thunder would score 2 points in the first quarter, as the Kaws scored 7 points. In the second quarter, the Thunder did a lot better, scoring 6 points on offense. In the second, the Thunder defense would allow the Kaws 7 points once again. Due to their slow start, the Thunder team was down 8-14 as the half ended.

The third quarter was not a good one for the Thunder. The Kaws would start on fire scoring 15 points. The Thunder would struggle only scoring 3 points in the quarter. The Thunder would still fight until the end as they came out and scored a solid 7 points in the final quarter. They looked pretty good on defense as well, only allowing 4 points. The Thunder would lose by the final score of 18-33.

“I think we played well, but we have room for improvement,” said Collin Jost.

The seventh grade B-team played a tough first quarter. The teams had a good battle going on as the Kaws scored 3 points and the Thunder scored 2 points. The second quarter saw a little more offense as both teams scored 6 points. As the game reached halftime, the score would be 8-9, with the Kaws on top.

The Thunder would struggle in the third, not scoring any points. The Kaws would extend their lead by scoring 4 points in the third quarter. The Thunder would score 5 points in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Kaws would score 9 points and beat the Thunder. The final score of the game was 13-22 with the Kaws winning.

In the end, both of the eighth grade teams came out victorious. While the seventh grade didn’t get a win, they will learn from their mistakes and hopefully they will come out on top in the next game.
