NCEMS Annual School Spelling Bee

The Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School Spelling Bee was held on Wednesday, December 18. This year’s contestants were Harry Langill, Alex Burkitt, and Tyler Nolte from fifth grade. In sixth grade, the contestants were Daniel Childress, Jade Macke, and Eli Sudbeck. The contestants competing from seventh grade were Alayna Scism, Logan Kraisinger, and Ayden New. Finally, in eighth grade, the contestants were Holden Bass, Joe Korber, and Alyssa Frye. The judges were Mrs. Angie Bass and Mrs. Laurie Stallbaumer, while the announcer was Mrs. Deb Kramer.

“It was super exciting to be in the spelling bee,” said Alyssa Frye.

During the Spelling Bee the students would walk up to the microphone, say the word, and then spell the word. If they got it correct they went and sat down in their chair then they waited for their next turn. If a participant got it wrong, they sat down in their chair and waited for the round to finish so they could go sit with their class.

After 9 rounds of the spelling bee, there were two participants left, which were Alayna Scism and Tyler Nolte. These two were on a roll correctly spelling many words. Finally, in round 25, Alayna Scism missed a word and Tyler Nolte went on to spell 2 more words correct to earn the title of the NCEMS Spelling Bee winner.

Tyler Nolte said, “In between going back and forth from me and Alayna it got me wondering who was going to win.”

The Nemaha County spelling bee allows seven participants from each school. Along with Scism and Nolte, the other five participants are Ayden New, Logan Kraisinger, Eli Sudbeck, Joe Korber, and Alyssa Frye. Good luck to the NCEMS participants in the Nemaha County spelling bee on Saturday, January 18!
