A Winter-Wonderful Lyrics and Literacy Night

On Thursday, December 12, the kindergarten, first grade, and second grade performed in their winter-themed Lyrics and Literacy Night. The Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School music teacher, Mrs. Chelsey Haverkamp, welcomed the audience and gave a short introduction about what was about to happen.

The kindergarteners kicked off the night by singing “Merry Christmas (Feliz Navidad).” The kindergarteners then sang “Little Snowflake,” “Reindeer Hokey Pokey,” and “Baby Christmas Tree.” During the songs, the students performed actions to go along with the lyrics.

After the lyrics portion of the night, the kindergartners and their families could visit their classrooms. The kindergartners showed their parents their classrooms and told them all about the projects they had finished during the semester. The parents read the book I Like Elves to them and enjoyed reading a creative writing piece written by their child.

“It was fun to sing the songs,” said Conor Henry.

When it was the first graders’ time to shine, they went in front of the audience and sang “Jingle Bells,” “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth,” “S-A-N-T-A,” and “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.”

Parents were invited to the first graders’ classrooms to see the maps they had made of the seven continents. The parents read a story the first graders had written, and then read them the book Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Riley Berkley said, “We sang fun songs and did awesome actions. Our parents read us a book in the classroom too.”

The last to perform of the night was the second graders. They sang “Let’s All Trim the Tree,” “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” The second graders wore sunglasses and used inflatable instruments for their last song.

Family and friends were invited to visit the second grade classrooms to see what their child had been doing. The students made habitats in their classrooms. They shared interesting facts about their habitats and pointed out cool features.

Nicole Lambrecht said, “I had fun dancing to the songs.”

The kindergarten through second grade Lyrics and Literacy Night went very well. The students did an excellent job of performing their songs and the parents loved watching their children.
