NCMS Football Team Suffers a Loss to Sabetha

The Nemaha Central Middle School football team went to Sabetha looking to beat their long-time rivals. This was NC’s second away game and they were hoping to go 4-0. There was a bigger crowd than usual because the schools are both in Nemaha County.

In the first quarter of the game, both teams started off a little slow. Neither team scored until towards the end of the quarter, because both teams’ defense was playing pretty solid. Late in the first quarter, Sabetha ended up scoring on a touchdown pass to Harper Schmelzle. The Thunder defense was able to stop the Bluejays on their two-point conversion try, making the score 6-0, Sabetha. In the second quarter, Sabetha’s offense was clicking and they scored two more touchdowns. They only made one two-point conversion because NC stopped their other attempt. The score at halftime was 20-0, Sabetha.

In the third quarter, NC kicked off to Sabetha and Sabetha ended up scoring later that quarter. Sabetha ended up not scoring the two-point conversion. The score was 26-0 with a Sabetha lead at the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, neither team scored. The final score of the game was 26-0 with Sabetha winning it.

Reid McKee said, “We tried our best. We ran hard, but just couldn’t pull out a win.”

NC walked away with a loss but are still looking to beat Holton. The Thunder athletes are using some of their mistakes in the Sabetha game to focus on how to beat Holton. They can still finish the season 6-1 if they play well.

In the fifth quarter, Sabetha started with the ball. They were moving the football on several plays and on the tenth and final play, they scored. NC tried to find the endzone on their 10 plays, but came up short throwing an interception on their final play. Both fifth quarter teams played well against each other.

Spencer Lockhart said, “We did good, but not good enough.”
