NCMS Volleyball Team Opens Season at Jeff West

     Volleyball season has officially begun! On the seventh grade team, there are fourteen girls participating in volleyball, while on the eighth grade team there are twelve girls. The managers are Alayna Scism, Samantha Holthaus, and Isabelle Evans. The coaches for this year are Nikki Honeyman, Carly Hill, and Lisa Holthaus.  The teams kicked off their season at Jeff West on Monday, September 9.

      The eighth grade A-team started off the first set a little slow and could not gain the lead.  They lost the first set with a score of 20-25. The Thunder girls were ahead several times, but the Tigers gained each time. Finally, the Tigers pulled ahead and won with a score of 20-25. As the third set rolled around, the Thunder girls began to click; they were making good passes, sets, and hits. They won the third match with a score of 15-8.  

      Alyssa Frye said, “It was a tough game. We could have played a lot better and communicated more, but I’m confident that the next game we will do really good.” 

      The eighth grade girls B-team started off the set with great plays, which helped fire up the team. The Thunder team went on to win the first set with a score of 25-12. In the second set, the Thunder team started a little slow and found themselves behind the other team, but after a few more serves, they finally regained the lead and went on to win the second set with a score of 25-20. The third set was a different story as the Tigers had some amazing serves to win the set. The Thunder team ended up losing the third set by 15-2. Overall, the Thunder girls B-team took home their first victory with a win in two sets. 

      While the eighth grade A-team was competing, the seventh grade A-team was playing on the other side of the court. The seventh grade A-team was playing very well dominating the match from the start, winning the first set with a score of 25-7. In the second set the Thunder team had an amazing start and kept the lead the entire match. The Thunder team won the second set with a score of 25-6. Finally, as the third set approached, the Thunder girls were still on fire and took the lead and the victory to win with a score of 15-5. 

      The seventh grade B-team started out a little shaky in the first set by a couple of points. Then, they picked up speed after a few points. The girls pulled through to win the set with a score of 25-20. As the second set came around, the Thunder girls had the lead the whole time and added a second win with a score of 25-18. In the last set, the girls had a close game. However, they were able to stick with it and win the set with a score of 15-12. Overall, the girls won the games with hard work.

      Madelynn Heiman said, “I thought it went very well, and we worked very hard.” 

      The Thunder teams had a great first outing with three of the teams picking up a win. The 8th grade A-team fell just short of a win. Overall, the Thunder girls played well, but still have some room for improvements.
