NCES Annual Grandfriends’ Day Celebration

It’s that time of the year again! The students of Nemaha Central Elementary School had awaited the day of Friday, September 6. Grandfriends’ Day had arrived and everyone was excited about the program! The annual Grandfriends’ Day celebration was held at 1:30 p.m. in the NCEMS gymnasium.

Before the Grandfriends’ Day celebration began, the seventh and eighth graders helped set up the gym during their P.E. time. They set up chairs and a projector, so that the students and Grandfriends could watch a video later. At 1:00, the fifth graders greeted grandfriends at the middle school doors as they arrived. The students seated their guests and visited with them while they awaited the start of the program.

At 1:30, the celebration began! The program started off with a welcome speech by Dani Reinecke. After the welcoming speech, the students watched a video with their grandfriends. The video  included a series of questions the students were asked about their grandfriends. Some of the questions were about what their grandfriend likes to do in their free time or what the students thought their favorite food was. After the video, the students played bingo with their grandfriends. If the students or grandfriends won, they got a candy bar.

When the first round of bingo was done, the students sang a song about their grandfriends to the music of “Old Town Road.” The students had learned a dance in music to the song which they also performed. When the video was done, they played a few more rounds of bingo. Then, the students taught their grandfriends the GoNoodle “Roller Coaster Dance.” The program finished up with another round of bingo.

As students walked out of the gymnasium, they stopped in the hallway and looked at the artwork on the walls. One of the projects was to write about what you will do when you are a grandparent. Students were also able to show their grandfriend their classrooms.

Grandfriends and students had a blast at Grandfriends' Day! Students were happy to be able to share their artwork and papers they made for their grandfriends with them. NCES students and staff were glad that everyone joined in on the fun celebrating Grandfriends' Day!

“I had a fun time playing bingo,” Isabella Rohlmeier said.

“I had a fun time seeing my grandfriend,” said Hayden Rottinghaus.
