Open House for NCMS 2018

    Excited students came prepared and ready for the open house on Tuesday, August 14. Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School students from preschool through eighth grade came with their parents/guardians to bring school supplies and meet the teachers. Middle school students had the chance to come and get used to their new lockers. They also saw some of their friends that they haven’t seen over the summer. Also, some of them saw new teachers.

    Younger classes, such as 5th grade and below came with the chance to see their new teachers too. Their parents also had the chance to sign up for class party planning and to sign up for seesaw, an app where students can take a picture of their work and send it to their parents. Some new students also had the chance to come and check out their new school! Plenty of these students were excited to come back even though some were reluctant. We all know that school brings people together and it can also be quite fun!

Miles Carpenter said, “I think the open house was good because I got to get my locker ready for the first day of school.”

    Jade Macke said, “I liked it because I got to see all of my friends.”

Show Them You Care
Education Is All About Relationships
The quote, “Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care,” is attributed to Theodore Roosevelt. John C. Maxwell is credited with paraphrasing it to “Students don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” I can’t think of better quotes that represent what we are trying to accomplish at Nemaha Central Schools. Education is all about relationships and each day our staff tries to show how much they care about the community, fellow staff members, parents, and, of course, our students!

At a time when it appears that our country and the world are becoming more divided and kids are less connected, our number one goal as a school district is to show our students that we care about them. Take a moment to think back on your educational journey and try to remember the best lesson you were ever taught. Now, take a moment and think about the teacher or staff member from your past or present that you enjoyed the most. I will bet you that thinking of the best lesson ever was more difficult to remember than that favorite teacher. I will double down on that bet and say that your favorite teacher made you feel special or connected with you on a level deeper than the content they taught. Excellent teachers and staff make kids feel safe, make school a positive place, create a climate that is accepting of everyone.

Nemaha Central has put an emphasis on building positive relationships with our students over the last several years, including making it one of our goals in our accreditation plan. But, our efforts don’t stop with students we want to build positive and working relationships with parents and grandparents, businesses, and the community. We have tried to develop programs that help us achieve that goal. We have Donuts with Dads, Muffins with Moms, Grand Friends’ Day, Veterans’ Day, and Pi Day as just a few examples from NCEMS. At NCHS, we use job shadowing, mentors for Senior Projects, Advisory Committees for CTE Pathways, and our School to Business Connection program as ways to develop relationships and partnerships to help make our students successful.

As we begin this new school year, I will give each of you the same challenge I gave our staff on the first day in-service: Think of someone who has made a difference in life currently or in the past and send them a handwritten thank-you note. Be sure to tell them not only how much you appreciate them, but also how they made a difference in your life. Not only will you make someone’s day, but I guarantee you, it will make your day better too!
