On Saturday, February 9, Nemaha Central held a tournament for a couple of 7th grade A-team basketball teams. The teams at the tournament were Atchison, Sabetha, Marysville, and Nemaha Central. NC would play non-league teams at the tournament. The first game the Thunder team played was Atchison.

Both teams got off to a good start ending the quarter with the Thunder team scoring 10 points and Atchison on top with 11. In the second quarter, the Thunder stepped up their game and ended the quarter with the lead, as the halftime score was 16-14.

Coming into the second half, both teams kept it close ending the quarter 24-21, with the Thunder holding onto their lead. Then in the fourth quarter, the Thunder boys came away with the narrow victory winning 30-28.

Joshua Gonzalez said, “I think we did great but we probably could have done better.”

The second game the boys played was against Marysville. The Thunder boys jumped out with a quick start taking the lead in the first quarter 11-4. In the second quarter, the Thunder boys played just as hard advancing their lead to 27-7, going into halftime.

After halftime, the Thunder boys came out and brought the score to 40-11 by the end of the third quarter. Then in the fourth quarter, the boys continued their string of great play and secured the victory, 48-12.

Carter Rottinghaus said, “We all had a great time at the tournament and there was a good amount of playing time for everybody.”

This was a great couple of games for the NCMS 7th-grade boys team as they go into the final weeks of their season.
