On Saturday, February 9, Nemaha Central Middle School hosted a boys basketball tournament for the following schools: Atchison, Marysville, and Sabetha. The Nemaha Central team only played 2 games and they were against the non-league teams of Atchison and Marysville. The first game the Thunder played Atchison.  The game started not to bad for the Thunder as they scored 7 points, however, Atchison scored 13 points leaving the Thunder down by 6 points. The second quarter the Thunder defense picked up a bit and Atchison only scored 5 points, while the Thunder put 13 points on the board. The halftime score was 20-18 with the Thunder now in the lead.

Once halftime was over, the third quarter had started and the Thunder was ready. The Thunder had some great defense only allowing Atchison to score 8 points, while the Thunder scored an amazing 15 points, to get a larger lead. The fourth quarter had begun and the Thunder team really wanted to win the game. The Thunder offense was still hot as they added 11 points to their score and only gave up 6 points to Atchison. The final score of the game was 46-32 with the Thunder winning the game.

“I think that the Atchison game turned out good because there were lots of learning experiences,” said Chase Korber.

The Thunder team met up with the Marysville Bulldogs in the second game of the day. Once the game started, the Thunder boys already knew it was going to be a tough game. The Thunder scored 8 points in the first quarter cutting it close with the Bulldogs scoring 7 points. The second quarter started off a little slow for the Thunder team as they were having difficulties scoring against the Bulldog defense. The Thunder scored only 3 points, while the Bulldogs scored 7 points. The halftime score was 11-14 with NC trailing the Bulldogs by 3 points.

After halftime was over, the third quarter was starting and the Thunder wanted to get the win. Things were not going as the Thunder team planned as they only scored 4 points, while the Bulldogs increased their score by 9 points. The Thunder knew that the fourth quarter was going to be tough to get the win and they had to step it up. The Thunder boys scored 12 points in the quarter which was great, but that was not enough as the Bulldogs scored 15 points. The final score was 27 to 38 for a disappointing loss for the Thunder team.

“The Marysville game was okay, but we could have run our plays a little better and not fouled so much,” said Cooper Hajek.
