The Nemaha Central Middle School sixth-graders took a trip to Snow Creek on Friday, February 8. Students left for the field trip after morning announcements and arrived at their destination mid-morning. The teachers going along with the students were Mrs. Betty Peterson, Mrs. Nikki Honeyman, and Mr. Terry Stueve.

When students arrived at Snow Creek, they met in the commons area and got instructions from the employees. Snow Creek was expecting to have 300 students that day, but because of the bitter cold temperatures that day, there were only 2 schools, Doniphan West and Nemaha Central.  This left the slopes wide open for the students to have a great day.

The students were assigned a set of skis and headed out to the slopes. But before they were able to go on the steeper free range slopes they had to take lessons from instructors. The students stayed with the instructors long enough to learn the basics, how to stop, turn, and the proper stance when skiing, along with other important ski tactics. After the students learned the basics, they advanced to other slopes and received constructive criticism from the ski coaches. While on those slopes they learned things like slowing down and weaving between obstacles. As the students completed the courses they were able to free range ski on any beginner slope they wanted to. Some students had purchased a ticket for more advanced slopes and wandered in that direction.

At lunch, students were provided hot dogs, chips, and a bottle of water with their ticket price. Students enjoyed their afternoon as much as possible, skiing away at the slopes with their classmates. It was a great day for the students with small lines and few causalities.  The sixth-grade students at NCMS rocked the slopes at Snow Creek!

“It was fun to go with the whole class for the first time!” said Madelynn Heiman.

“It was a fun experience and it was fun to ski for the first time!” said Lane Mosteller.
