On Tuesday, February 5, the Nemaha Central Middle School 7th and 8th-grade boys played exciting basketball games against the Hiawatha Red Hawks. The NCMS Thunder A-teams and B-teams played hard and finally got a clean sweep of wins for the night.

To start off the night, the 8th grade A-team played an amazing first half. The 8th-grade NCMS boys got out on top in the first quarter with a score of 8-3. In the second quarter, the Thunder boys did well defensively stopping the Red Hawks from outscoring them. The Thunder team added another 6 points to their score while the Red Hawks only scored 3 points, making the halftime score 14-6.

The Thunder team played aggressively in the second half, adding 9 points to their score in the third quarter, while the Red Hawks only scored 2 points. The intensity was rising greatly. The score was now 23-8. The fourth quarter was awesome with NC scoring another 9 points, however, they did give up 9 points to the Red Hawks also. The final score was 32-17 with a Thunder victory.

The NC Thunder 8th grade boys B-team played an amazing game too. NC was off to a slow start in the first quarter, leaving the Red Hawks with a lead of 3 points. The first quarter ending score was 4-7. The Thunder played an extravagant second quarter, scoring 10 more points and only allowing the Red Hawks 4.  NC took the lead at the half with a score of 14-11.

The basketballs were flying and the crowd was cheering as both teams scored 6 points in the third quarter. Overall, the Thunder boys were hanging in there still winning with a lead of 3 points. In the fourth quarter, the Red Hawks tried to get the lead, but as they scored, NC would answer with a basket of their own.  Both teams ended up adding 6 more points to their score, which was enough for the NC B-team boys to get their first win of the season 23-26.

“I thought we played a really good game and we got the win, ” said Korbin Macke.

The 7th grade A-team boys are having a very successful season this year and the Hiawatha game showed this. In the first quarter, the Thunder seventh grade A-team had an extremely strong quarter, starting off by scoring 19 points. To top it off, the defense held the Red Hawks from scoring. The Red Hawks were way behind and the Thunder seventh grade A-team was going strong. In the following quarter, the Thunder boys added 17 points to their score, while the Red Hawks only scored 6 points. The halftime score was 36-6 with a 30 point Thunder lead!

The Thunder was on a roll and the third quarter was no different, as they scored 14 more points to the Red Hawks 5 points. The score at the end of the third quarter was 50-11. In the fourth and final quarter, the Thunder boys did not let up adding 19 more points, raising their total to 69.  The Hiawatha Red Hawks only scored 4 points during the fourth quarter, raising their score to 15. The final score for the seventh grade A-team game was 69-15, with another NC victory.        The Thunder seventh grade B-team also played an exciting, victorious game against the Hiawatha Red Hawks that night. The Thunder B-team only played 2 quarters, but each quarter was still a success for the Thunder B-Team. In the first quarter, the Thunder B-team scored 11 points, and the Hiawatha Red Hawks scored only one basket, making their score for the first quarter 2. The ending score for the first quarter was 11-2. In the second and final quarter, the Thunder B-Team scored 13 more points raising their total to 24. The Hiawatha Red Hawks added one more point raising their total to 3 for the last quarter. The final score was 24-3 with a Thunder win.

“It was a good and fun game,” said John Langill.

This night was the first time that the NCMS boys basketball team swept the competition by picking up all 4 wins.  Hopefully, it continues to happen.
