The Nemaha County Spelling Bee had a delay due to the weekend's weather. It was moved to Saturday, January 26 at the Nemaha County Courthouse. There were 22 participants this year. The schools that competed this year were Sabetha Middle School, Nemaha Central Elementary/Middle School, Sts. Peter and Paul School, Centralia School and the F.A.S.T. Home School Group.

Nemaha Central’s participants that attended this year were: Kylee Sperfslage, Alyssa Frye, Alayna Scism, Kathryn Yunghans, and Isaac Lueger. Each participant was given a word that they had to spell correctly. If spelled incorrectly they were eliminated. There was a total of seven rounds as participants slowly got out one by one. The winner of this year's spelling bee was Ryan Uphaus, who won on the word diagnosis. The runner up was Alyssa Frye of NC, and placing third was Miles Wimberly of Centralia.

Uphaus will compete at the state level on March 9 at Newman University, in Wichita. The winner of that competition will advance to Washington D.C.

“People seemed to get out very fast. There were only a couple of rounds,” said Alyssa Frye.

Good luck to Ryan Uphaus as he heads off to compete again soon!
