The Nemaha Central Middle School boys’ basketball team traveled to Holton to take on the Wildcats on Thursday, January 17.  The 8th-grade A-team game started off with the Holton team playing very aggressive basketball and scoring 12 points in the first quarter. The Thunder team struggled to break the press and score but managed to get 4 points on the board.  During the second quarter, Holton kept the aggressiveness going scoring 15 points and the Thunder still struggled to score, adding only 3 more points. The half time score was 7-27 with the Thunder team trailing.

After half time was over, the third quarter started and the Thunder team improved their level of play. In all, the Thunder boys scored 12 points and the Wildcats only scored 6 points. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder team played hard scoring 7 points, but were unable to stop the Wildcats as they added 10 more points. The final score was 26 to 43, a tough loss for the Thunder.

After a disappointing loss for the A-team, the 8th-grade B-team was ready to play some basketball. The first quarter started off rough for the Thunder as they only managed to score 4 points as the Wildcats put 14 points on the board. During the second quarter, the Thunder was still struggling to score, as they were held scoreless, but the Wildcats added 12 more points. The halftime score was 4-26 with Holton on top.

When halftime was over the Thunder kept trying to get some points on the board but couldn’t manage to get many. The Thunder scored only 4 points while the Wildcats scored 10. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder was still struggling to score on the Wildcats but were able to get 4 more points, while the Wildcats managed to get 11. The final score was 12-47 for another tough loss for the Thunder boys.

“I don’t think our team played the best they could in the first period, but in the second period we came close,” said Garrett Huerter.

The seventh-grade A-team game started off with a strong showing by the Thunder team scoring 13 points and only allowing the Wildcats a point. The Thunder boys continued playing well scoring 7 more points and holding the Wildcats to only scoring 2 more points. NC had a big lead at halftime 20-3.

After halftime, the Thunder went on a run scoring 16 more points while only letting the Wildcats score 6 points. The last quarter NC slowed down and only scored 4 points, but still held off Holton to only allowing them 3 more points. The final score was 40-12 with another seventh grade A-team victory.

“I think we played well but could have played better,” said Holden Bass.

After the Thunder seventh-grade A-team game, the seventh-grade B-team got off to a good start and were hoping it continued. The Thunder team started off scoring 7 points, while holding Holton scoreless in the first quarter. When the second quarter came rolling around, the Thunder team had only added 4 points to their score and Holton was on the board with 6 points. The Thunder team had an 11-6 lead at halftime.

When halftime was over, the Thunder boys when out on the court and scored 6 more points to keep the lead, while Holton was trying to catch up with 4 points of their own. The fourth quarter was a battle for the Thunder boys. The Wildcats made a run to win the game by scoring 10 points. The Thunder team played hard and were able to only score 5 more points, however, that was enough to give them the victory. The final score was close, but the Thunder had won by 2 points, 20 to 22.

Even though the 8th-grade teams did not come out on top, they look forward to matching up with the Wildcats again and hopefully with a different outcome.
