The Nemaha Central boys’ basketball team faced off against Hiawatha on Thursday, January 10. In the first quarter of the eighth grade A-team game, NC got off to a great start by scoring 11 points and holding Hiawatha to 2 points. In the second quarter, NC was able to put 9 more points on the board while keeping Hiawatha to only scoring 4 more points. At halftime, the score was 20-6 with the Thunder up by 14 points.

The Thunder went into the locker room feeling good but knew they had to keep on playing just as hard. NC came out working just as hard in the third quarter putting 15 points on the board, but Hiawatha stuck with them putting 13 points on the board as well. At the end of the quarter, the Thunder had the lead 35-19. The Thunder did not have that great of a fourth quarter, only scoring 5 points, but they only allowed Hiawatha to get 6 more points to make the final score 40-25. This win increased the NC Thunder eighth grade A-team record to 2-0 on the season.

“It was a good game and we blew them out in the first quarter,” said Brendon Feltner.

In the eighth-grade B-team game the Thunder team had a slow start only scoring 4 points in the first quarter. Hiawatha managed to double their score, scoring 8 points. NC and Hiawatha both were able to put 4 more points on the board in the second quarter making the halftime score 8-12 in Hiawatha’s favor.

At halftime, the Thunder boys went to the locker room and talked over what they needed to do to get this game closer and take the lead. In the third quarter, NC was not able to put the ball in the basket and Hiawatha was hot scoring 12 more points. In the fourth quarter, NC was able to score 6 more points, but it was not enough as Hiawatha scored 4 more points. The final score was 14-28 with a Thunder loss. The NC Thunder eighth grade B-team is now 0-2 on the season.

The seventh grade A-team was ready to play some basketball. In the first quarter, the Thunder boys were able to put 12 points on the board, while only letting Hiawatha score 2 points. In the second quarter, NC was able to increase their lead by scoring 12 more points and only letting Hiawatha score 4 points. At halftime, the score was 24-6 in NC’s favor.

The boys went into the locker room feeling good about their lead but knew they couldn’t let up their level of play. NC was able to come out strong in the third quarter, putting 15 more points on the board, while only letting Hiawatha score 3 points. NC had a commanding lead with the score of 39-9. In the fourth quarter, NC was only able to score 8 more points, but shutout Hiawatha’s offense by not letting them score at all. The final score was 47-9 and the NC Thunder seventh grade A-team increased their record to 2-0 on the season.

Reid McKee said, "It was really fun, I had a great time playing basketball with my friends.”

In the first quarter for the seventh-grade B-team game, the Thunder boys had a good start by scoring 9 points and only allowing Hiawatha to score 1 point. NC had a harder time getting the basketball in the basket in the second quarter and only scored 5 points. Their defense let up a bit, allowing Hiawatha to score 8 points on them. At halftime, the score was 14-9 with NC ahead.

The Thunder boys went into the locker room thinking they had to execute their offense better and play better defense if they wanted to increase their lead in the second half. Their strategy worked as the Thunder boys almost doubled their score in the third quarter adding 13 points and only allowing Hiawatha 4 points. At the end of the quarter, the score was 27-13 with NC winning. In the fourth quarter, NC was able to put 5 more points on the board, but they allowed Hiawatha to score 7 points. The final score of the game was 32-20 and the NC Thunder seventh grade B-team is now 2-0 on the season. Overall, the NC boys are off to a great start on the season and hope to keep the winning streaks going.
