The final game of the Nemaha Central Middle School girls basketball season took place on Thursday, December 6.  With high hopes of getting 2nd place this season, the NCMS girls fought valiantly and hard.

During the first quarter of the A-Team girls basketball game, the NC girls started strong scoring 10 points while Perry was held scoreless!  The next quarter Perry had a little more fighting spirit in them, but the NC girls had more. The NC team scored 1 more point than last quarter and Perry only scored 4 to make the score at halftime 21-4.  The Lady Thunder kept going strong after halftime and never let up. The Thunder scored another 10 points, while only allowing Perry 3. The last quarter the Thunder girls lost a little bit of steam, but barely any.  The Thunder scored a total of 7 while holding Perry to only 2 points. The NC Lady Thunder had a commanding victory winning 38-9 and ending the season in second place in the Big 7 League behind Sabetha.

After the A-Team game was over, it was the B-Team’s turn to finish the season strong.

With the first quarter starting the girls didn’t have much fire.  They were not scoring much and both teams scored very little with the Thunder leading 4-2.  As the second quarter rolled around, the girls looked like they had a lot more fire in them.  The Thunder girls scored 12 points with Keirston Huerter leading the way scoring two three-pointers.  NC had stretched their lead by 12 points with a score of 16-4. As halftime ended, the Thunder still kept that fire in them during the third quarter scoring 10 points and leaving Perry with only 2 points.  With the game seemingly in the bag, the Thunder still never lost their fire. The Thunder scored 9 points while holding Perry scoreless. As the clock ran down, the Thunder B-Team secured an easy victory winning the game 35-6.

Gracyn Lierz said,  “We were able to defeat them pretty easily in both games and had fun while doing it!”

Now that the 8th grade A-Team and B-Team were over, it was time for the 7th grade A-Team and B-Team.  Starting with the 7th grade A-Team, the first quarter was a fight. Both teams, Perry and NC had really close scoring in the first quarter.  They ended the first quarter with Perry in the lead 8-6. As the 2nd quarter rolled around, Perry seemed to lose some fire. Perry only scored half of what they did last time as NC scored the same as they did last time.  When the clock hit zero and signaled halftime, the score was 12-12, a tie ball game.

Both teams were ready to try to gain control of the game, but when the third quarter ended, the game was still tied.  With high hopes of becoming first in the Big 7 League, the 7th grade A-Team was determined to win. The game was close, but NC played amazing defense and held Perry to only 4 points.  While Perry only scored 4, the Thunder came out ready. The Thunder put up 7 points with Mya Ganstrom scoring a three-pointer putting the Thunder on top and winning the game 25-22. The Thunder girls accomplished what they came for and the 7th-grade A-Team finished first in the Big 7 League.

It is now the 7th-grade B-Team’s time to shine.  The first two quarters for the B-Team were a little rough.  In the first quarter, the Thunder only managed to score 2 points while Perry scored 4 giving Perry the lead by 2.  The same thing that happened it the first quarter then happened again. Perry held NC scoreless, but NC also played some good defense only letting Perry score 2.  As the clock sounded to start halftime, the score was 6-2 with Perry in the lead.

Once the girls came out of the locker room, they had some more fire.  Kate Heinen, of the Lady Thunder team, led the way scoring all of NC’s 4 points while the defense held Perry to 2 points.  The third quarter ended with the Thunder team trailing by 2, 6-8. With the 4th quarter rolling around, the Thunder still had fight left in them.  NC played exceptional defense holding Perry scoreless while once again Heinen led the way for the Thunder. Heinen scored a total of 6 points in the fourth quarter and as the clock ran down the NC Thunder team celebrated the victory, 12-8.

Heinen said, “We worked hard and did great!”
