The Nemaha Central Lady Thunder Middle School Basketball teams played their last home game against the Holton Wildcats on Wednesday, December 5. This was the Nemaha Central Thunder’s second game against the Holton Wildcats. This particular game was a makeup game for the Thunder and the Wildcats. Since it was a makeup game, there were only games for the A-Teams.

To start off the evening, the Lady Thunder 8th grade faced off with the Wildcats. In the first quarter, the Lady Thunder scored four points. The Lady Thunder had a tough defense that Holton couldn't penetrate. As a result of the Thunders’ tough defense, Holton didn't score. In the second quarter, the Thunder put an additional ten points on the board. Yet again, the Wildcats couldn't get through the Thunders’ defense. Concluding the first half the score was 14-0 with a strong NC lead.

Coming back from halftime, NC scored five more points. Holton scored their first three points of the game in the third quarter. The score was now 19-3 with NC still on top. Holton attempted to make a comeback in the 4th and final quarter, scoring ten more points, but NC managed to score 9 of their own. At the end of the game, the score was 28-13 with Nemaha Central gaining their second win over Holton.

Ella Larkin said, “Even though we had different circumstances, we pulled through and won.”

After the 8th grade dominated the Holton Wildcats, the 7th grade took a shot at a win. The first time these teams played, Holton won but it took 3 overtimes for this to happen. The first quarter went by really fast and another close game was taking place with an 8-6 Thunder lead. By the end of the first half, the Thunder team was up by one, 14-13. Struggling to take a big lead, Coach Steinlage went into halftime and tried to find a way to encourage her team.

The second half was starting and coach had a plan. She was going to shut the other team down, and that is what the Thunder girls did. The Thunder tightened their defense and Holton only managed to score 4 points. The Thunder team increased their lead to 7 points by the end of the third quarter, 24-17. The Thunder team relaxed a bit at the start of the fourth quarter and before they knew it, the Wildcats were back in the game. Soon it was a tied ball game, but the Thunder girls were determined to get the win this time. Slowly, the momentum shifted back to the Thunder and they won the game, 32-27.

Alyssa Frye said, ”It was really close the whole game, but we made a good comeback for a win.”

It turned out to be a really good night for the NC girls basketball teams as both games ended with a Thunder victory. The 8th-grade team also added some excitement to the night by wearing Christmas socks for the game. For one of the last games, it was a good one to end on at their home court.
