The Nemaha Central Thunder girls basketball team traveled to Jeff West on Thursday, November 8 to play the Tigers. The Thunder girls had started off the season playing the Tigers and were able to get 4 wins. They were hoping to do the same thing again, playing on the road at the Jeff West gyms.

The night kicked off with the eighth-grade girls A-team game. Ella Larkin was the one to tip off for the Thunder. The Thunder team got on the board in the first quarter, but the Tigers were hanging right there with them. At the end of the quarter, the Thunder girls were leading 8-3. In the second quarter, the NC girls scored 5 points while holding the Tigers scoreless. The halftime score was 13-3.

At halftime, the Thunder team talked about how they were going to play better defense and how they were going to run the offense. When the Thunder girls returned to the floor they were ready to play some more basketball. During the third quarter,  the Thunder offense added 4 points to their score, while defensively, they held the Tigers to only 2 points. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 17-5 with the Thunder in control of the game. As the fourth quarter got underway, the Thunder offense continued to work hard as they outscored the Tigers. The Thunder team ended the game with another victory with the final score of 21-6. With this win, the Thunder B-team was getting ready to hopefully get a win also in their upcoming game.

The B-team game got underway as Emilie Strahm won the tip-off for the Thunder. The Thunder team played hard in the first quarter putting 5 points on the board offensively and holding the Tigers scoreless. The second quarter was the same for both teams as the Thunder team stretched their score by a basket and the Tigers managed to score a basket also to get on the scoreboard. The Thunder team took a 7-2 lead going into the locker room feeling good about the first half of the game.

The Thunder team talked about the offense they were going to run and what defense they were going to work on in the second half. The NC girls came back to the floor ready to have some more fun playing basketball. The third quarter was a big quarter for the Thunder team as they pushed their score to 15 points, while only allowing the Tigers to add 3 points. In the fourth quarter, the Thunder team stayed hot offensively adding 10 points to their score.  The Thunder went on to win the game 25-5.

“The Lady Tigers played well, but not good enough to beat us,” said Keirston Saenz.

The 7th grade A-team started off the game with a low scoring first quarter. The Thunder girls were able to hit a couple of baskets, while the Tigers made 1. At the end of the first quarter, the NC girls were up 4-2.  In the second quarter, Jeff West was making a run for the lead. The Thunder team played hard, but they were outscored by a point. The halftime score was 10-9 with Jeff West trailing.

In the third quarter, the Thunder team played hard and the offense was working as they scored 12 points. However, Jeff West was not going to give up as they scored 9 of their own. Then came the last quarter and NC didn’t play their best only scoring one point, while Jeff West added 9 points to their score. With Jeff West outscoring them in the last quarter, the Thunder team took a loss on the season, 23-27.

After the 7th grade A-team game, the B-team took the court looking for a win. In the first quarter, the NC girls started with the lead outscoring Jeff West 6-4. The second quarter came around and NC only scored 2 points while Jeff West scored 5. This put the Thunder girls down by 1 point at halftime 8-9.

The third quarter was tough for the Thunder girls also. Jeff West was able to add 8 points to their score, but the Thunder team only made a basket in the quarter. The score at the end of the third quarter was 10-17, Jeff West.

The last quarter got underway and NC was trying to catch up.  The girls worked hard and scored 9 more points. The Tigers held on by adding 4 points to their score to keep the lead and get the victory 19-21. The Lady Thunder team played hard and had fun even though they were unable to get the win.

It was a good night for the 8th grade as they picked up 2 wins.  The 7th grade came up short in their games, but they can focus on improving their weak areas in the games to come.

Mya Ganstrom said, "We tried our hardest even though we didn't win."
