The Nemaha Central Middle School girls basketball team was excited to have another game, which was held at Holton on Monday, October 29. The Lady Thunder team was ready to play hard and try to defeat another team. The Thunder team was also excited considering they had only played three games so far.

The NC 8th grade A-team started off great in the first quarter scoring 6 points while, defensively, they held the Wildcats from scoring. In the second quarter, NC had a hard time scoring against Holton but managed to put 4 points on the board. The Wildcats scored to get on the board and the first half ended with a Thunder lead of 10-2.

In the third quarter, NC hit it off with amazing defense leaving Holton scoreless and adding 4 points to their lead. As the nerves started to fade on both teams, the Wildcats and the Thunder both got the offense going in the fourth quarter, scoring 9 points apiece. The Thunder team was able to claim the victory in the game, 23-11.

Lilly Schultejans said, “After a tough loss to Sabetha, it was really awesome to come out and play a great game.”

After the A-team game, the 8th-grade B-team game started. The first quarter ended with a 4-4 tie between the Thunder and the Wildcats. NC kicked it in gear in the second quarter by adding 7 points, while the Wildcats only scored 4. The Thunder team led at halftime 11-8.

As the third quarter began, NC played some amazing offense that Holton just couldn’t handle. The Thunder girls scored 12 points, while the Wildcats trailed with 7 in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams had picked up the defense and they were only able to add 3 points to their scores. The Thunder team won the game 26-18 and were excited to get another victory for the season.

The seventh grade A-team game was going on at the same time as the eighth grade but in two different buildings. The Thunder started out the first quarter very strong and the Wildcats weren’t able to keep up resulting in the first quarter score to be 10-6. The second quarter, however, is where things began to change. The Thunder started the quarter out very slow and were held scoreless, allowing the Wildcats to gain the lead 10-11.

In the third quarter, the Thunder started to regain a bit of the offense they brought out in the first quarter. The defense picked up the pace and only allowed the Wildcats to score 5 points.  The Wildcat defense was still tough, only allowing the Thunder to score 4 points. The quarter ended with the Thunder trailing by 2 points, 14-16. The fourth quarter was a great quarter for the Thunder. The Thunder resumed a strong offense scoring 13, but the Wildcats also had a great quarter scoring 11 points. As the clock ticked down in the fourth quarter, the teams were tied at 27, sending the game into overtime. The game intensified as the overtime play began. Both teams were fighting for the victory, however, the game was not decided until after the third overtime. The Lady Thunder came close, but they were unable to pull out the win. The final score of the nail-biting game was 39-42.

Following the seventh grade, A-team was the B-team game. The Thunder was hoping to get revenge on the Wildcats and get a seventh-grade win for the night. The Lady Thunder started out very strong in the first quarter. The Thunder team dominated the quarter and slipped away with 9 points, while only allowing the Wildcats a point from a free throw. The Thunder came out just as strong in the second quarter, as they did the first. The Wildcats began to pick up their pace on defense only allowing the Thunder to score 6. The Wildcats were able to add 4 points to their score, but they were left in the dust in the first half with a score of 15-5.

The third quarter is where the game began to intensify. The Wildcats defense was superb and the Thunder wasn’t able to score any points. The Wildcats, however, had gotten past the Thunder for a short moment scoring 2 points,  ending the third quarter with a score of 15-7. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcat defense was just as good as the last quarter holding the Thunder scoreless once again. The Thunder’s defense, however, began to dwindle down and the Wildcats added 6 points to their score. However, Holton fell short and this time, the game ended in regulation time 15-13. The Thunder so far has had a great season and is looking forward to many more learning opportunities and hopefully more victories.

“The game was very engaging. The seventh grade A-team went into three overtimes and barely lost. The seventh-grade B-team snuck away with a win by two points. They were good games overall,” said Alyssa Frye.
