The season has begun for the Nemaha Central Middle School Lady Thunder basketball teams. The Lady Thunder has 12 eighth-grade players and 14 seventh-grade players participating this year. The managers for the season are Henriette Yemba, Hallie Holthaus, and Cali Honeyman and the coaches are Heather Sullivan and Laura Steinlage.

Jefferson West was the Lady Thunder’s opponent for the first game held on Monday, October 15. All four games were held at the Nemaha Central High School. For the eighth-grade games, they were held in the main gym. The Lady Thunder 8th grade A-Team started out really strong posting a lead of 7 points but were ready to excel that lead. The Tigers fought hard but couldn't outscore the Lady Thunder. At the end of the first half, the score was 13-5 with the Lady Thunder in the lead. As the Thunder cruised through the second half, the Tigers tried hard to come back but the Thunder stopped the Tigers and came out on top with a score of 33-16.

Ella Larkin said, “I thought we did well for our first game and that we played pretty well as a team.”

Following the 8th-grade A-Team was the 8th grade B-Team. In the first half of the game, the Lady Thunder scored a total of 15 points while the Tigers scored only 4 points. After halftime, NC came out ready to extend their lead. At the end of the third quarter, NC racked up 10 more points, while Jefferson West was struggling to keep up scoring only 2 points. In the last quarter, the Thunder completely shut down the Tigers. The Thunder team added 10 points to their score. At the end of the game, the final score was 35-6 with the Thunder team claiming the victory. Overall, the 8th grade A and B Teams are both 1-0 after a great night of basketball.

The 7th-grade teams both played in the secondary gym at the NCHS. The 7th-grade A-Team was a bit nervous and it showed in the first half. The Tigers gave them some tough competition the whole game. The NC girls were still getting used to playing their first game of basketball this season and the Tigers hung with them.  The Thunder girls had a 2-point lead at halftime, 11-9.

In the second half, the Lady Thunder tried to increase their score, but only managed to add 8 points to their score, while the Tigers scored 10.  This evened up the score, and the first game of the season was going into overtime. Overtime was not what coach Steinlage planned for, but the Lady Thunder team was ready to play hard for the victory.  The first overtime began and the teams battled back and forth. At the end of the overtime, the score was still tied so a second overtime was needed. The Lady Thunder team really wanted this first win so they went all out.  The Tigers were matching them point for point going down to the final seconds. The Thunder managed to pull ahead by 1 point to get the win with a score of 27-26.

"The game was fun because they gave us a challenge," said Kylee Sperfslage.

The 7th-grade B-Team girls started out with a better run than the 7th A-Team. For the first half, the Thunder blew the Tigers out of the water with a score of 16-4. The Tigers were ready to come back in the second half though. So the Tigers came back scoring 13 points in the second half, but the Thunder just couldn't be beaten. The Thunder came back and scored 15 points in that half too,  making the final score 31-17 with the Thunder on top.

It was a great first outing for the Lady Thunder teams in the Big 7 League.  All four teams were able to get their first win of the season in their first night of play. They hope to keep the streak going.
