The Nemaha Central Middle School football team destroyed the Hiawatha Redhawks on Thursday, September 13.  The Thunder won the toss and elected to defer, which meant Hiawatha would receive the kick. Hiawatha goes on a short 3rd down and out and is forced to punt.  Then the Thunder team drove down the field and scored on a 1 yard run by quarterback, Cooper Hajek. NC then failed to convert on the 2 point conversion. Hiawatha held the ball for the rest of the 1st quarter, but the NC defense was strong enough to keep them from scoring.

At the start of the 2nd quarter,  NC stopped the Redhawks on 4th down, 15 yards away from the endzone.  NC then drove down the field in 7 plays, and on the 8th play Carter Rottinghaus had a 10 yard touchdown run.  After the touchdown, Cooper Hajek threw to tight end, Blake Stallbaumer, who lunged over the Redhawks cornerback for a successful two-point conversion. The Redhawks had the ball again, but they were stopped on another fourth down.  NC also goes 4 downs and out and Hiawatha had possession of the ball for the rest of the half. The Thunder football team took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

After halftime, Hiawatha started off with the ball, but they didn’t have it for long.  NC was able to stop the Redhawks from moving the ball to gain a first down. The Thunder team was able to score this quarter with a great play by the offense.  With the offensive line doing their part, Cooper Hajek was able to get a 32 yard touchdown run to add another 6 points to the board. The Thunder team tried to go for the conversion, but they were unsuccessful. The score at the end of the third quarter was 20-0.

The Thunder team had another good start to the fourth quarter.  The defense was able to hold the Redhawks and they were forced to punt.  NC gained possession of the ball and were able to add another touchdown to the score.  Again, the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful by the Thunder team. After the touchdown, NC changed things up a bit and Hiawatha was able to find the endzone and get on the board.  The Redhawks were also able to convert for 2 more points. The rest of the quarter was a tough battle back and forth, but neither team was able to add to their score. The ending score of the game was 26-8 with another great Thunder victory.

“We played a great game and we had a lot of fun,” said Carter Rottinghaus.

“We played good and we played physical,” said Cayden Edelman.
