The Nemaha Central volleyball team headed to Hiawatha on Thursday, September 13 for another exciting game of the season. The Thunder was excited to play knowing they were still undefeated. The Hiawatha Redhawks had previously gotten third in the Big 7 tournament last year so the Thunder expected some tougher competition which they received.

The eighth grade A team headed in a little nervous. The Thunder team started off the match a little shaky getting down by 5 points. The NC girls then decided to stick it into gear and show the Redhawks what they’re all about. The Thunder girls had some great pass, set, and hit plays and eventually ended up winning the first set 25-13. The second set started off strong with some more kills and amazing plays. The Thunder team was fired up now and very excited as they were playing well.  Their serves were more aggressive and were difficult for the Redhawks to return as the Thunder girls went on to win, 25-11. The high level of play and aggressive serving carried over to the third set as the Thunder team shut down the Redhawks, 15-2.

“The game didn’t start off great but we were determined and were able to come back to get the win,” said Lilly Schultejans.

After the eighth grade A team match, the eighth grade B team started. The Thunder had amazing serves that Hiawatha just couldn’t handle. The Thunder had some pass, set, and kill plays that put them in the lead by several points. The final score for the first set was 25-15 Thunder. The Thunder girls were fired up and ready for the next set.  With their unstoppable serves, they were able to defeat the Redhawks bad in the second set 25-4. The third set was just as good as the other sets. They got out there and showed the Redhawks what they could do and defeated them 15-6.

Going on at the same time as the eighth grade matches were the seventh grade A-team who was also dominating their competition. The Thunder girls had a strong first set with some powerful serves that the Redhawks had a hard time returning. The Thunder girls won the first set 25-9. The second set, however is where things got a little rough. The Thunder's serve receive went downhill from the first set. Hiawatha had many aces causing the game to become a little too close.  The Thunder girls battled for the win, but just couldn’t pull it together causing them to lose the set 24-26. The third set was a nerve-racking set for the Thunder. The Thunder team decided to get their act together and were able to sweak out another win with a score of 16-14.

After the seventh grade A team got the win, it was time for the seventh grade B team match. The Thunder girls started the game out dominating the Hawks with their serving. With many aces, the seventh grade won the first set 25-10. The Lady Thunder serving became an advantage as they picked up a win in the second set, 25-13. Once again, the Thunder dominated in their third set with a score of 15-6.

Emma Stallbaumer said, “This was a really fun night to play volleyball. Our serve receive was not the best and caused us some trouble, but we managed to pull through and win all our games.”

Overall, the Thunder is truly showing the Big 7 what they’re all about. The Lady Thunder has a clean sweep so far and is hoping to win a couple of  Big 7 League championships in the future.
