For students at the start of the year, it seems like that eighth grade promotion date is a long way out, but for Nemaha Central Middle School, the day arrived on Wednesday, May 16. Thirty-five students were ready to put on that gown and receive the diploma.  The commencement ceremony began with the walk into the gym to the "Pomp and Circumstance" music.  Mrs. Laurie Niehues, school counselor, gave a welcome and introduced the principal, Dr. Amy Beck.  Dr. Beck asked several of the eighth grade students to come forward and talk about their class.

Representing the eighth grade class was Ryan Lueger, Sam McWilliams, Rachel Schmitz, and Ellie Mady.  They highlighted the eighth grade year from academics, athletics, to their involvement in the community.  Ellie Mady set the stage for the class video produced in Mrs. Betty Peterson's classroom by fellow students, Messiayah Nolte, Diamond Bentley, Jeremiah Dalrymple, and Ellie Mady. After the video, Savannah Engelken and Nadia Padilla introduced the commencement speaker, Mitchell Heiman.  Mitchell was a 2014 graduate of Nemaha Central Middle School and a soon to be high school graduate of Nemaha Central High School.  Mitchell discussed some important ideas to be successful in high school and at the top of his list was respect and hard work. Next, Andrew Frye and Katelynn Scott gave a tribute to parents.

The President's Award for Educational Achievement followed the parent tribute.  Students that were recognized for having a GPA of 3.0 for at least 4 of the 5 middle school semesters were Kurtis Beck, Marcus Beck, Amber Blume, Blake Korber, Levi Kraisinger, Sam McWilliams, Messiayah Nolte, Nadia Padilla, Slade Uselton, and Alan Vasquez.  The next area of awards was the President's Award for Educational Excellence.  Students that were recognized for this award had a GPA of 3.5 or better for at least 4 of the 5 middle school semesters.  Those students being recognized were Taryn Bergman, Savannah Engelken, Andrew Frye, Taryn Ganstrom, Nicole Hammes, Mo Hilbert, Ryan Lueger, Ellie Mady, Kaleb Reitz, Mia Schmitz, Rachel Schmitz, and Katelynn Scott.

The next awards were presented by class sponsor, Mrs. Angie Bass.  The American Citizenship Award was earned by Savannah Engelken, Taryn Ganstrom, Ellie Mady, Mo Hilbert, Kolby Koch, and Kaleb Reitz. The last award was the KSHSAA Citizenship Award which went to Savannah Engelken and Kaleb Reitz.

Finally, the presentation of the eighth grade class at Nemaha Central Middle School was made by the superintendent of schools, Darrel Kohlman. Joe Reitz and David Clements represented the school board for the presentation of the diplomas.  The 2018 NCMS eighth grade class members receiving diplomas were Brenden William Bearce, Kurtis Von Beck, Marcus William Beck, Diamond Renae Bentley, Taryn Leigh Bergman, Amber Lee Blume, Jeremiah John Dalrymple, Savannah Rose Engelken, Andrew Michael Frye, Taryn Ayla Ganstrom, Nicole Elizabeth Hammes, Trenton Joseph Heiman, Jacob Scott Heinen, Jacob Edward Hermesch, Maurice Robert Hilbert, Kolby Lee Koch, Blake Allen Korber, Levi Allen Kraisinger, Ryan Matthew Lueger, Ellie Grace Mady, Ethel Johnson Yumba Mauwa, Samuel Perry McWilliams, Messiayah Michael Nolte, Katelyn Lee Ohlsen, Israel Malachi Padilla, Nadia Gisselle Padilla, Logan Scott Parker, Jonathan Donald Player, Kaleb Michael Reitz, Jonathan Tyler Ross, Mia Lee Schmitz, Rachel Hanna Schmitz, Katelynn Grace Scott, Slade James Uselton, and Alan Alexi Vasquez.

The recessional took place and the students received best wishes outside in front of the school from friends, family, and staff members.  Congratulations to the eighth grade class of 2018!
