The Scholars’ Bowl OTL Championship was held at Saints Peter and Paul School on Monday, February 26. There were 2 pools that the teams were split up into. The participating A-team players from Nemaha Central were Messiayah Nolte, Andrew Frye, Ellie Mady, Kaleb Reitz, and Taryn Bergman, and the NC B-team players were Gracyn Lierz, Ella Larkin, Lilly Schultejans, Jaden Thomas, and Cooper Hajek. Katelynn Scott was absent from the A-team squad the day of the tournament.  Assisting as managers in case the teams were split up were Nicole Hammes and Mia Schmitz.

The NC A-team had a strong start in the pool play. In round one, NC’s first opponent was Centralia. The round ended in an NC victory, the score being 70-40. NC’s next match was in round three against Frankfort. NC fell behind at first but was able to consecutively answer enough questions led by Kaleb Reitz, to win the round. The final score of round three was 70-60. In round 5, NC had their third match of pool play against Axtell. Both teams put in good effort, but NC prevailed. The final score of round 5 was 70-20. Round 7 was the NC A-team’s final round in pool play, and NC played against Troy. NC trounced Troy, with a score of 90-(-5). After sweeping pool play, the NC team advanced to tournament play as the number one seed from the blue pool. In the semifinals, NC faced Doniphan West. The final score was 60-30, NC being the victor. The last A-team match was the finals, played against Onaga. Onaga could consider themselves drubbed, because the final score was 80-30, NC once again emerging triumphant from competition and winning the Oregon Trail League tournament.

"We competed pretty well and it was great to win the championship," said Kaleb Reitz

The B-team was also in the blue pool. Their first match was in round two against Centralia. NC won the very close match with a score of 50-40. In round 4, NC had their second match, going against Frankfort. NC won with a score of 60-45. The NC B-team’s third match was in round six against Axtell. NC lost the low-scoring match, and the final score was 25-40. The final B-team match in pool play was round eight. NC won against Troy in this match, the round-ending score at 55-20. With a 3-1 record in pool play, the B-team advanced to tournament play as the number two seed from the blue pool. In the semifinals, the NC B-team played SPPS. The game was extremely close, but NC won by a question towards the end of the round. The semifinal score ended at 50-40, bringing NC to the finals against Axtell. After losing to Axtell in pool play, the team knew they had to be quick on the buzzers.  The NC team was down by 10 going into the last 4 questions.  The team pulled it together and answered the last 3 out of 4 questions correct to get the win. The final round ended in an NC victory, Axtell being defeated, 50-30.

"It was great to win the OTL scholars' bowl tournament in the last year of being in this league," said Lilly Schultejans.

"I was extremely proud of this group of students who stayed calm and did so well under pressure when needed.  It was great to be able to win both divisions as our last time competing in the OTL," said Coach Peterson.
