If you walked into the gym after school on Tuesday, November 28, you would have seen the roar of boys running up and down the court; basketball season is here! The Nemaha Central Thunder boys basketball team battled Most Pure Heart for the first game of the season. The Thunder basketball team consists of 32 boys. There are 18 seventh graders and 14 eighth graders. The Thunder team is coached by Cory Bass, Todd Krause, Nate Beck, and the manager is Brenden Bearce.

The night started out with the C-team game. This was the first middle school game for most of the boys and the team was a little nervous. In the first quarter, the score was 7 to 2 with the only bucket scored for NC by Brendon Feltner. During the second quarter, Trenton Heiman had an amazing shot that made the crowd erupt. This made the halftime score 4-16 in favor of Most Pure Heart. The second half was much like the first half with the Thunder team only scoring a couple of baskets. This was a good learning experience for the C-team even though they lost 9 to 30.

Garrett Huerter said, “I was pretty nervous before the game. The game wasn’t that great, but it was still fun to play.”

The B-team boys were second on the court. In the first quarter, Blake Stallbaumer tipped off and Isaac Lueger got the tip and took it down the court. The Thunder team was on fire offensively scoring 12 points to Most Pure Heart only getting a free throw, making the score 12-1. The second quarter was a tough defensive quarter as both teams scored very few points.  The halftime score was 16-6 in favor of the Thunder.  Blake Stallbaumer dominated the second half for the Thunder scoring a whopping 15 points to help the Thunder team. The defense did their part holding Most Pure Heart to 8 points in the second half.  The Thunder team was victorious in the game with a final score of 45-14.

“We were all nervous, but ready to get the win. The game ended up turning out great,” said Jaden Thomas.

Finally, to end the night the A-team boys took the court.  Marc Beck won the tip-off and right away Ryan Lueger got the ball and scored a basket. The Thunder team was playing strong defensively, which helped them outscore Most Pure Heart in the first quarter 13 to 4. In the second quarter, the scoring was about equal and the Thunder team took a 22-11 lead into halftime. The third quarter was another close scoring quarter for both teams although the Thunder team scored 7 points with the help of Messiayah Nolte, Kurt Beck, and Marc Beck, Most Pure Heart added 5 points to their score. In the last quarter, the Thunder team was outscored by 7 points.  The final score of the game was 34-28 with the Thunder team getting their first win. What a fantastic way to start the season!

“It was a fun game to play to start the season, and it was awesome that we won,” said Marc Beck.
