The fifth graders finally reached the point in science where they held a couple of fun and interesting experiments. This year the extravaganza was a friendly competition between fifth graders at Nemaha Central (NCES) and Saint Peter and Paul (SPPS). The event happened on Friday, November 17, in the afternoon. Many parents attended the Engineering Extravaganza to see the work of these young scientists. Mrs. Heather Sullivan and Mrs. Lisa Holthaus were the fifth grade teachers in charge of the event.

There were two separate events; On-Site Build Events and Build-At-Home Events. In the On-Site Build Events the fifth graders chose between constructing a straw boat, building the tallest tower with 100 toothpicks, or using 50 index card and 25 inches of tape to construct a tower. In the Build-At-Home Events the students chose between constructing a clothespin car, making a contraption for the egg drop, or constructing a marshmallow catapult.

Results: For the On-Site Build Events in 1st place constructing a Straw Boat was Kate Niehues, 2nd place was Nate Stallbaumer, 3rd place was Landon Nolte, 4th place was William Lueger, 5th place was Carli Rottinghaus, and 6th place was Keaton Dalinghaus.

In 1st place constructing the Tallest Tower with 100 Toothpicks was Elijah Ruegge, 2nd place was Anthony Lueger, 3rd place was Reagan Gerety, 4th place was Evan Olberding, 5th place was Colby Frehe, and 6th place was Lilly Engelken.

In 1st place building the Tallest Tower Using 50 Index Cards and 25 Inches of Tape was Cali Honeyman, 2nd place was Kaitlyn Hammes, 3rd place was Feryn Feldkamp, 4th place was Reese Gerety, 5th place was Presley Lutz, and 6th place was Claire Kaster.

For the Build-At-Home Events in 1st place Designing a Clothespin Car was Nate Stallbaumer, 2nd place was Reagan Gerety, 3rd place was Presley Lutz, 4th place was Elijah Ruegge, 5th place was Gabby Chapa, and 6th place was Maddie Heiman.

In 1st place for building an Egg Drop Contraption was Collin Jost, 2nd place was Lilly Engelken, 3rd place was Alayna Scism, 4th place was Carli Rottinghaus, 5th place was Hallie Holthaus, and 6th place was Lucas Holthaus.

“It was awesome, but my egg broke in the egg drop and I wanted to change my parachute,” said Emmery Schmelzle.

“It was pretty cool because I got 3rd place in the straw boat contest,” said Landon Nolte.
