The Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School (NCEMS) hosted its annual Veterans’ Day program for veterans on Friday, November 10. The faculty in charge of this program were Mrs. Nikki Honeyman, Mrs. Renee´ McKernan, Mrs. Chelsey Haverkamp, and Mrs. Emily Heideman.

The program kicked off with the American Legion Color Guard leading the way with the veterans following. At the beginning of the program, Mrs. McKernan gave a warm welcome to our veterans. Then, Alan Mueting said a prayer for all of the veterans that have died in the past year from this area. Right after that, all of the students, staff, and veterans stood up and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Mrs. Melinda Jones, kinderprep teacher, sang the Star Spangled Banner. Next, the veterans stood up for the branches of the military they served in as the students sang their song. The next part of the program was the video of pictures of veterans submitted by local residents. After the video, Mrs. Jones sang “Traveling Soldier.” Then, a Nemaha Central High School student, Carmen Rivera-Cobian played TAPS. For the closing of the program, the students sang “God Bless the USA.”

Right after the program, the veterans and their family members proceeded into the cafeteria for coffee hour. On their way to the cafeteria, the veterans saw the patriotic decorations made by the students that covered the walls.

Bob Langill said,”It was great and I thought the veterans really appreciated it.”

“I thought it was nice and the veterans liked it,” said Alivia Stallbaumer.
