On Thursday, October 12, the Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School hosted a Lyrics and Literacy Night. The 5th and 6th grade classes performed songs in the gym and then showcased their projects in the classrooms. Mrs. Chelsey Haverkamp is the new music teacher at NCEMS and she is directing her first Lyrics and Literacy Night.

The 6th grade started off the night with singing Surfin’ USA by Brian Wilson. They dressed up in surfing clothes and other accessories. Following up with the Surfing theme, they sang Surfin’ Safari by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. Their third and final song was Keep Your Head Up by Andy Grammer.

The 5th grade performed next with their first two songs incorporating dance moves. They sang with a little bit of kick, “I’m Still Standing” by Bernie Taupin and Elton John. They followed up with “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin, and Shellback. They rocked the house with their final song, “Thunder” by Ben McKee as they sang and played the drums.

When students were done with the gym activities, they went to their classrooms to showcase their projects for their family members. The 5th graders shared their Reader’s Theatre Plays to all their special guests. The 6th grade showcased how to use teachtci.com and shared their pic collages in Mrs. Honeyman’s room. In Mr. Stueve’s room they showed their science notebooks which detail their recent investigations in class. They presented their Freak the Mighty posters in Mr. Hiltgen’s class. In Mrs. Stallbaumer’s room, the 6th grade class highlighted Espresso Yourself Cups and descriptive paragraphs to their family and friends. In Mr. Baumgartner's math class they featured their area models and descriptive graphs. Mrs. Peterson's class displayed Halloween projects using Microsoft Word.

“I thought Lyrics and Literacy was okay. One of my favorite things about it was the music we danced to. I liked dressing up as a surfer, it was fun,” said Makenna Sloop.

“I thought it was awesome. My favorite thing about Lyrics and Literacy was that we got to dance,” said Landon Nolte.
