The solar eclipse has been an attention grabbing experience for many people.  A solar eclipse happens when the moon comes between the Earth and Sun’s direct path, causing it to appear as if the Earth has had a shadow cast upon it. Though there are two other types of solar eclipses, the main one is a total solar eclipse.

Total solar eclipses that are in the same location happen around once every 375 years. It is a rarity to experience a total solar eclipse because they happen so infrequently in a minuscule band around the Earth. When a total solar eclipse occurs the sun goes through many phases. The phase of totality is the darkest and shortest phase of them all. The light you see during totality is the corona which is the outermost part of the Sun’s atmosphere. The corona is typically referred to as a halo because it is a shining light that goes completely around the moon.

“I liked it! I was surprised how bright it was, it looked like a really bright light was close to me,” Celeb Hynek said.

The forecast showed light rain across Nemaha County, but most of the clouds cleared off just in time for the eclipse to begin. Though some places weren't as fortunate, places like Manhattan and Highland had travelers come from all over the country, but they couldn’t see the eclipse.

“The solar eclipse was an amazing sight that not everybody got to see,” said Isaac Lueger.

Many schools gave out glasses that protect your eyes during a solar eclipse. Without eye protection the sun can give severe damage to the retina which may cause the observer to lose their sight. As long as you keep the glasses on, the eclipse should be a fun experience. With a once in a lifetime view and the time with family and friends the eclipse seemed to be a successful experience fo the students at Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School.

“I was really nervous because I did not want my son to take off his glasses, but it was a wonderful experience and I loved being able to enjoy it with my family,”  said Mrs. Reinecke, a teacher at NCEMS.
