The Nemaha County Spelling Bee was held on Saturday, January 21 at the Nemaha County Courthouse.  There were 31 participants in the event.  Five schools participated in the bee, including Nemha Central, Centralia Schools, Sabetha Schools, as well as a few home schools. Nemaha Central's participants this year were:  Joe Korber, Nyah Heinen, Ravin Holcomb, Messiayah Nolte, Madilynn Scott, Emilie Strahm, and Savannah Engelken. Each participant was required to spell a given word correctly, and were eliminated by spelling incorrectly.  The bee went on for several rounds, as more and more participants were leaving the microphone, the numbers dwindled.  The winner of the entire bee was Kari Edelman, who won with the word "graffiti."  Second place was Spencer Strahm.  Both Edelman and Strahm will represent Nemaha County at the Topeka Capital Regional Spelling Bee on March 4 at Shawnee Heights High School in Topeka. Messiayah Nolte from NC finished in third place. The winner of that bee will advance to Washington D.C.   The participants had a great time, and the winners will be happy to advance their journey to victory.

"It was fun, it was awesome, and it was a great experience for everyone," said Messiayah Nolte.
