New Year, New Name, New Technology

Can You Hear The Thunder

July 24, 2014

I have always said that one of the best parts of working for and being involved in a school district is that there is a new beginning with the start of every school year. With the start of this particular new school year; big changes are coming. We have a new name, new colors, and a new mascot along with a new Technology Initiative to be excited about.

One of the changes is the reconfiguration of the buildings within the district.  The closing of the B&B Junior/Senior High School building and the name change from Nemaha Valley to Nemaha Central gives our students and staff a rare opportunity. Not many people get to be a part of the start of what is basically a new school district with new schools with a new name.  It is also the start of great new traditions and educational excellence for the students of Nemaha Central.  I am excited about the chance to watch as we blend the best of the past into an exciting future for The Best Schools in Kansas.

With the new Technology Initiative, we will continue our pursuit of educational excellence with  the advantage of added resources. At the Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School, the students will have the use of iPads.   For the Nemaha Central High School, each student will have a MacBook Air laptop computer. The goal is to have the technology that will be able to be a benefit and to amplify the creativity and accessibility that 21st Century Learners need to compete globally. For more information about each buildings technology go to:

Also new to the district is our motto, One Journey - Endless Opportunities. We believe that is what we have in Nemaha Central USD #115. We are all on One Journey but together we have Endless Opportunities.

These additional opportunities come from the added class options at both the Nemaha Central Middle School and the Nemaha Central High School.  Also benefiting our students is the addition of the Highland Community College Western Tech Center in Baileyville; after-school programs at the Nemaha Central Elementary School; and any of our extra-curricular activities.

As with any change, it will take time to work through unforeseen obstacles and to adjust to the new direction that USD #115 is going. I ask for your patience with these and any changes but also encourage you to contact me at 336-6101 or by e-mail at dkohlman@usd115.org.
