January 13, 2014 BOE Meeting

At the January 13, 2014 regular meeting, the Nemaha Central Board of Education approved publication of a notice for the hearing to close the B&B school building. In accordance with K.S.A. 72-8213b, prior to adopting a resolution to close a school building, the Board of Education shall call and hold a hearing on the proposal. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, February 20, 2014 beginning at 7:00 P.M. and will be held in the B&B main gym. The notice will be published at least once each week for two consecutive weeks in the local newspaper.

In discussion of the 2014-15 school calendar, Supt. Kohlman asked board members if they would support additional time on the school day, offset by fewer days in attendance. It was the general consensus of the members to continue with the current time schedule. Kohlman will disseminate a draft of the calendar which is very similar to the current year to staff for suggestions and bring the calendar to the board for final approval in February.

Select supplemental contracts for next school year were approved to aid in scheduling summer camps and planning. Approved as the NCHS head football coach and athletic director was Warren Seitz. NCHS head volleyball coach will be Jessica Koch and Jon Thomas will continue as head cross country coach.

Members approved the replacement of bleachers in the main gym by selecting a bid from Interkal (Heartland Seating) at a cost of $130,394. Following discussion of the type of back rests included in the bid which are individual “Comfo-Back”, Supt. Kohlman was asked to inquire about changing the back rests on part of the bleachers. There was concern that individual back rests may not be comfortable for some people.

The board also approved bids from NL Driveway Maintenance to fill cracks and reseal the parking lots. Other projects to be considered for the summer will be gym floor painting and  refinishing, painting both of the high school gym walls, replacement of the 2008 buses, art tables and stools and security upgrades.

Supt. Kohlman reviewed the Strategic Plan and progress made in the different Target Areas to date. Significant progress has been made and it appears that the Plan has served its purpose in guiding decision-making through 2015. Kohlman told members to expect selecting a Vision Statement and Mission Statement for the district in the near future.

No action was taken following two executive sessions to discuss non-elected personnel and employer-employee negotiations.
