January 10, 2013 Special Board Meeting

The USD #115 Nemaha Central school board held a work session on January 10, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The focus of the meeting was to discuss the three options for the future use of facilities that were approved at the November Board of Education meeting as well as how each option effects the financial gap in the budget in two years. The three options are: Option #1 All 6th-8th Graders @ B&B Facility, 9-12 @ Seneca, PreK-5 @ Seneca; Option #2 Close B&B Facility with students attending facilities in Seneca; Option # 3 Transition over time with B&B JH closing followed by B&B HS.

A report was made about the recent visits that the administration made to stand-alone middle schools in Kansas to see how they operate and how it would look in Nemaha Central.

Lots of information was shared including enrollments numbers, costs associated with each building, and a possible schedule for a middle school with some additional exploratory classes. The next step in the process will be gathering input from all stakeholders. That would include community meetings with small groups given the opportunity to receive the same information that the BOE received at the meeting and give patrons an opportunity to voice their opinions/concerns. The timeline is for the meetings to take place between end of January and the end of February with no decision being made until March.
