December 10, 2012 BOE Meeting

December 12, 2012

The Nemaha Central Board of Education received a request for a donation for a Nemaha Valley High School band trip to the Alamo Bowl in December, 2013. The group has raised approximately $8,000 of the $25,000 estimated cost of the trip through various fund raisers. Requested by the group was permission for the trip, $1,600 to be used for transportation expense, and to open an invitation to B&B High School students. Approximately 45 students and parent chaperones will be attending from Nemaha Valley. It was pointed out that the charter bus is for 55 passengers. Following discussion, the board advised the group to make a request from the Nemaha Valley Schools Education Foundation for a donation. A motion was made to approve the trip for Nemaha Valley High School students.

Ben Scism, teacher at B&B Junior/Senior High School informed members of a new concept he is using in grading students in his 7th grade class. He explained the “standard based grading” which is based on “objectives” the student has mastered. Students have multiple opportunities within the quarter to reassess the objectives to change their grade. Ben showed an example of a test taken under his previous system compared to the same test given under the new system.

Supt. Kohlman stated that he, Jason Hammes and Gary Niehues had met on Monday, December 3 with representatives from the USD 113 Prairie Hills (Sabetha) school district regarding the land transfer requests from Bern area patrons. He stated that the property agreed upon for the transfer request was narrowed down to the area from “O” Road and west to the current USD 115 boundary line and from 176th Road north to the state line. The approximate assessed valuation of the property is $2 million. The USD 113 Board is discussing the issue at their board meeting this same evening. Mr. Kohlman stated that he has a letter and affidavit that will be mailed to all the property owners in the designated area. Property owners interested in having their land transferred from USD 113 to USD 115 will be asked to return the notarized affidavit.

Supt. Kohlman addressed the recruitment & retention of staff, most specifically the evaluation system changes in the near future. Also addressed was one of the three options for facilities that was approved last month - a stand-alone middle school in Baileyville. He stated that the administrative team has been discussing this idea and will make visits to several middle schools next week.

The board approved the purchase of “Build Your Own Curriculum” software for teaching staff for three years. Also approved was a bid for replacement of the roof on the district office from Diamond Everley Roofing in the amount of $11,400. Members gave Supt. Kohlman permission to advertise for an Information Technology Director for the district.

A special meeting for a work session was set for Thursday, January 10, 2013 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
